[QUOTE]Portland police had to be called in to subdue a 22-pound house cat that trapped its owners inside their bedroom after attacking their baby.
The baby was not injured in the Sunday incident.
Sgt. Pete Simpson, a Portland Police Bureau spokesman, said officers responded to a 911 call that evening from a couple who had locked themselves in their bedroom with the baby and their dog after the cat attacked the child.

probably the baby tugged on the tail too much or something like that.
Saw the title of the thread and took an actual spit take.
That's one fat cat

Depends on breed. Some cats, such as the Maine Coon Cat, are normally around 22lbs

big kitty
potentially fat cat
Sounds like a pretty violent one, though, for the parents to lock themselves in their room with the kid.

I have a Maine Coon and can confirm this. Big cats.
Not as big as F1 Savannah's though.

Also prices for f1 Savannah's are insane. $12k is on the low end for kittens.

I have one thats somewhere around 3/4 to full Maine Coon. He looks and acts like a full one, however he is on the lower end as far as size goes. Still a good bit bigger than other house cats

Don't those things piss everywhere though?
I don't see why you'd want one.
bad kitty
Thats 10 kg. Not that much to be honest. My dog is probably heavier. Not that they were overreacting though, as I would most likely do the same.
my cat is over 20 pounds, but hes a big fat tabby

hes big but 20 lbs is not that big
and I thought my cat was fat. Had to switch her to light beer.

(no I don't actually let my cat drink)
My mild prejudice against cats and knowledge of animal behavior makes me inclined to believe that the dog was probably acting in the baby's defense in response to the cat lashing out in irritation, and that the parents only heard or barely saw the commotion before they were responding to their child's cry.
It seems more likely than two animals of different domesticated species teaming up to attack a human. It'll be a shame if it was true and the dog ends up in the pound or being put down because of it. It must have been absolutely nightmarish for the parents, though.

How the hell is it even partway likely that two animals of a different species are teaming up to attack another human? The fuck is this, Open Season or some shit?

I stated that the other scenario I came up with was more likely than the two animals teaming up (which the article implies the parents believe).
I was responding to the wording of the article, which is presumably based on hearsay and the parents' testimony. It says they called the police and claimed that both animals were attacking the baby, so I thought up a more plausible scenario based on my knowledge of the 'soft' science that makes up our current understanding of animal psychology and what could have possibly happened between a baby and the two pets.
Without knowing the breed of the dog and more information about what happened of course, it is all speculation.
I suppose I was hoping to start a discussion of the importance of understanding the minds of the animals we trust with the lives of our defenseless offspring. I've met people who leave their three and five year old children alone with large breed dogs, without ever considering that they may be setting up a pattern that has a chance of ending in tragedy or at the very least life-altering injury later on.
From my perspective, it seems like common sense to not allow infants and young children to be in close proximity to potentially dangerous animals without being within a distance that allows immediate or prompt intervention. Other people disagree and swear by the trustworthiness and their pets. What do you think?

And commenters are defending the cat. Not sure if they should be.
the dog owed the cat money after it lost a bet pertaining to chasing a laser pointer
the cat put a hit out on the baby for yanking his tail and chewing on his catnip filled toys
the dog was about to finish the job and clear his debts when he fucked it up and the cat came to finish the job
but then the owners intervened
case solved

no they are just inferior

Saw the title and thought "Hu. The owner of all of Portland barricaded themselves in. Must be quite a big fence."

This is the internet. Cats are infallible, and dogs are Satan.
Hell, if an animal, possibly rabid, was harassing me and my family I wouldn't deal with that shit either and call in animal control and stay indoors.
Calling the fuzz for a pissed off cat? Seriously? You don't exactly have to give a cat the peoples elbow to make it stop. Just boot it out of the way or toss some water on it.
What a bunch of pussies.

Yeah trying to keep their baby safe from a violent animal fukin scrubs

I think that was a joke.
My maine coon was around 30 pounds but he was huge even by maine coon standards. That cat was a fucking badass. If he wanted your attention and you were ignoring him he'd grab your wrist and pull your hand toward him.

You misread the article. The couple locked themselves in together with their dog and infant.
