The single coffee cup craze has been rolling now for several years in both the United States and Canada, with Keurig, Tassimo, and Nespresso all battling it out to lock down the market. In order to protect their dominant market share, Keurig makers Green Mountain Coffee Roasters has been on a bit of an aggressive tear of late. As with computer printers, getting the device in the home is simply a gateway to where the real money is: refills. But Keurig has faced the "problem" in recent years of third-party pod refills that often retail for 5-25% less than what Keurig charges. As people look to cut costs, there has also been a growing market for reusable pods that generally run anywhere from five to fifteen dollars.
Keurig's solution to this problem? In a lawsuit (pdf) filed against Keurig by TreeHouse Foods, they claim Keurig has been busy striking exclusionary agreements with suppliers and distributors to lock competing products out of the market. What's more, TreeHouse points out that Keurig is now developing a new version of their coffee maker that will incorporate the java-bean equivalent of DRM -- so that only Keurig's own coffee pods can be used in it.
Ah yes; taking lessons from Ubisoft. Soon you'll have to sign each Keurig pod into a thing called 'K-BREW' before making your coffee

K-Brew would suit it more

How do people not see what a massive, unbelievable scam this is compared to regular coffee?

genius; changed it
I prefer using an aeropress myself

what
Coffee flavour DLC
How do you like make a machine that can determine which pods are "legit" and which are not?
Glad I bought my Keurig a couple years ago, sounds like they might be going downhill.
How do you like make a machine that can determine which pods are "legit" and which are not?
Maybe some kind of RFID thing. Whatever it is, they would have to either be able to legally prevent other companies from faking it, or make faking it really difficult.

Also, DRM'ed coffee machine? Sounds entertaining to hack.
I'm pretty sure there's a few trade laws in the EU that want to have a word about this.
I'm amazed that people buy this. Convinced the only reason these things sell is because it looks like a shiny nice appliance you can show off in your kitchen.
It's such a huge waste of money. These machines don't make coffee that's any better or worse than a normal coffee maker that brews correctly with nice quality beans, but its twice as expensive and you'll be spending 4X more in coffee using their cup system. If quality is your concern, you'll get much better coffee just making it in a nice quality french press with beans you grinds yourself at the store (free) or at home if you want it fresher (you'll need a grinder, not more than $20-$40). Hell you don't even need to do that - just buy nicer quality coffee beans. Viola!
Seriously, just buy some nice arabican whole bean coffee at the store, grind it at the store, and then make coffee with that. It'll taste so much better than Folgers, and taste just as nice (if not better) than a Keurig.
The only place where a Keurig makes sense is in an office where people just make coffee on demand next to the water cooler as a company expense. Or in lobby's where your customers can make themselves coffee on demand while they wait.
Every time I see someone with one of those Keurig machines, theirs always seems to be broken or breaking down one way or another after just a couple of months of ownership, and not even regular maintenance seems to remedy the situation.
The resemblance to Ubisoft is just uncanny at this point.

But making a cup of hot coffee/tea/cocoa in under 60 seconds without cleaning anything but your mug is soooooo nice though.

In an office, just get a bunn.
Coffee is cheap, and water is practically free. You can make several hundred gallons for the price of a big box of their cartridges.

Yeah, the tea is only slightly more expensive than when it comes in bags usually, so it isn't too much of an issue. Also if you want something that doesn't come in k-cups, you can always just use it as a hot water heater with a controlled output.
Who cares, Keurig coffee tastes like dog food.

Tea all day erry day.
Also, I can get another mug of tea in about 60 seconds anyway, and all I wash is my cup. No machine, no DRM, just me and my tea bags.

My parents bought me 2 pounds of nice whole arabica organic fair trade coffee beans for Christmas, haven't looked back since.
So wait, is the DRM in the cup? if so, can't you just break the cup and paste it on your own cup?
You can buy re-usable k-cup things that you put your own grounds into, that's what my family does
Though these fuckers are fickle, and generally make weak ass coffee unless you pack it JUST right, but if you pack it too tight the water won't get through and you'll end up with about half the coffee you expected.
How do people not see what a massive, unbelievable scam this is compared to regular coffee?
I have a coffeemate knock off keurig and I use my own coffee in reusable filter cups that I bought on ebay for $2. It's way easier because I'm the only one here who drinks coffee so making a whole pot is time consuming and it gets wasted.
Turkish style coffee master race. This whole Keurig coffee making thing seems utterly retarded and if you can't wait a couple of minutes for water to boil to make your coffee then you should learn how to manage your life better.
