Sea Shepherd Australia says one of its ships has collided with a Japanese whaling boat in the Southern Ocean.
The incident comes eight days after the Sea Shepherd Fleet blocked off the slipway of Japanese factory vessel Nisshin Maru, suspending whaling activity.

Captain Hammarstedt says the Steve Irwin vessel was also "attacked" by whalers.
"The Sea Shepherd ships Steve Irwin and Bob Barker were both unprovokedly attacked by three harpoon ships belonging to the Japanese whale poaching fleet," he told the ABC.
"These harpoon ships came in heavy and hard. They hit my bow with about 300 metres of steel cable with the express intent of causing damage to my rudder and propellers.
That's malicious. Both sides are basically involved in a game of bumper boats. This is as violent as you can get without actually being in a naval battle with each other.
Also it doesn't help any that the Bob Barker appears to have dazzle camouflage (I'm no expert though), these guys must be getting a tonne of cash for this:

Didn't this already happen before a while back? Except this time it seems their boat didn't split in two and sink to the bottom.

Several times in fact. this has been going on for a long time. The instance you're thinking of was Shonan Maru ramming the Ady Gil.
Although I hadn't heard of the camo job on the Barker.
Bethune posted an open letter to his Facebook page on October 6, 2010 in which he said that after colliding with the Shōnan Maru 2, Watson directed him to deliberately sink the Ady Gil for PR purposes.
Disgusting. What kind of captain would sink his own ship?
dazzle camo is so fucking cool looking
dazzle camo is so fucking cool looking
It's basically 50% of the reason I posted this article. The other 50% is because whales are cool and Japan is silly.
From what's bolded in the OP it sounds like the whalers tried to use a prop fowler on them, which is a common Sea Shepherd tactic.

As far as the camo goes, they got that awhile back. Both the Bob Barker and the Steve Irwin have it.
Didn't these guys have a TV show a while back?
I remember watching it a bit... Some of the whaling ships claimed to be research ships. They literally had giant ass signs with that on it hanging off the boats.

This. While whales are cool and stuff. I still hate watson to his guts because not only he sunk his own ship, the Earthrace was one of my favourite ships ever.
IIRC, both parties are breaking the law, though Sea Shepherd is technically in the morally right, just not legally. If someone would please correct me on this, never paid much attention to them really. They should see the backing of governments, would make it better.
How about no.

Whales aren't just "cool and stuff", these people have dedicated their lives to this cause. I can see him trying to use this against the whalers to show how aggressive and insane these people are. Not justifying him sinking his own ship, but it was probably on its way down so they just sunk it. When you see a group of people killing something as intelligent as a whale, you get a little crazy-eye.
Sea shepard has always struck me as rather evangelical about Japanese whaling. For the most part I don't think anyone should really give a shit about whaling as long as they do not catch threatened species. Its pretty disturbing to see the lengths the Sea Shepard people go to in order to save <1000 minke whales.

Which are extremely common

You do the same shit to the Japanese, its all fair in love and war.

Yep, they're researching how well whale meat sells.
The answer is badly.
Whaling is no different from big game hunting. You take a big gun, go out into the wild, track down an animal and shoot it. Then you wait for it to die and go and collect the carcass.
I think both are unnecessary and cruel.
some intense boat ramming footage

Fuck those whale hunters.
If i was allowed i would put a harpoon straight up there ass.

I'd put a harpoon straight up your ass for such terrible grammar but I'm not an advocate for violence.
i don't get it, why do they keep buying these big fast ships when they should be building/buying U-boats and just start laying nets and shit infront of the ships
[editline]2nd February 2014[/editline]
the international community should just change the loophole so that for every whale killed in the name of research requires a donation of X dollars to some international wildlife-protection fund. that'd make them pay! (quite literally)

all of sea shepherd's ships are donated, and pretty outdated at that

The boats are bought with large sums of donated money.

They had a submarine once upon a time, but they got rid of it just before it was gonna be used. It was a little tourist sub with windows painted like an Orca ment to scare whales away from ships.

i don't think how common they are is a factor when it comes to how intelligent they are and the methods used by the whalers
