The culture ministry put out a statement condemning as "uncivilised" habit of inviting exotic dancers to induce more people to attend the funeral, the official news agency Xinhua reports. The ministry named two recent examples where strippers had been invited to stage "obscene performances" - one in north China's Hebei Province and another in east China's Jiangsu. In both cases, both organisers and performers have been punished, it said, adding that it will work with police to stamp out the practice.

"Having exotic performances of this nature at funerals highlights the trappings of modern life in China, whereby vanity and snobbery prevail over traditions," Xinhua thunders. Many on social media appear unaware of the custom - and are aghast. "I really don't understand how this can be seen as moral," one says, although another sees the funny side: "Strippers at funerals? You're killing me! What kind of trend is this?!"
"I'm devastated that grandpa died"
*rains 20s on stripper*
This is a thing?
Look! Grandpa got a stiffy!
Heard this was a tradition to make the deceased happy. Not sure where.

Article says it's just to make more people attend.
Stripping clothes is just a metaphor for stripping your soul of your body. If anything, they should be hiring more strippers.
And instead of a pole just put the coffin upright.
Come for the funeral, stay for the rǔfáng.
we have funeral strippers??? man this is news to me. i doubt my family would ever employ them though
They could remake Weekend at Bernie's with this idea.
Want if i want strippers at my funeral?
twerking for the dead homies.
I'd be alright with it, I want people to have fun and party when I die :v:

people keep saying the shitty things china does today is out of 'tradition' and shit, from having rude tourists to people shitting and spitting in the streets to this
it's not.
Traditional Chinese culture died after the cultural revolution, and there was a lot of bullcrap after that. Everything, including a lot of Confucian stuff, such as things like loyalty to parents, etc, was torn apart during the cultural revolution. Loyalty to Mao only.
The Chinese living in other places (like Vietnam, Singapore, Taiwan, United States) who emigrated before the cultural revolution and whatnot nowadays are miles closer to traditional Chinese than those living in mainland china now. The same goes for Hong Kong to some degree, though they've had their fair share of changes too.
tl;dr shit like this is not tradition at all, everything changed after the cultural revolution and now modern mainland Chinese is a far cry from what it was traditionally.

I said some where else (not China) but close by, and was mentioned in another article. I can't find it but if I do I'll post it.
Funerals don't have to be sad they can be a happy occasion.

the cultural revolution can explain itself i hope
take a look though. there's examples all around even if you don't know jackshit about the cultural revolution.
traditional chinese script is generally more common out of china than in, older dialects such as cantonese is still spoken in hong kong, while after the communists, canton now speaks predominately mandarin.
look at how modern chinese act and compare that to how they're supposed to act under traditional conduct. Loud tourists? Take how the Chinese workers who came to America and worked on the railroad acted. They were noted for being exceptionally quiet, never complaining, etc.
and populations moving from their mainland are known to be sort of time capsules in general. For instance, I've heard that the French in Quebec are closer to the French of the 1700's than the French of now.
there's a bunch of things, and it feels like shit that I should put this much effort into answering a two-word post. I should have left it at the first line, but whatever.

Being part of an admittedly rather stereotypical Taiwanese family, I can say that this is definitely true.
Most of it is born out of sheer pragmatism. To directly quote my mother, "Why give a shit about what happens at your funeral when you'll be dead anyway".
FYI its more of a big thing in Taiwan. Its to appease the dead, and it is also done behind closed curtains.
Source: I've been to one, never saw the strippers stripping. They just go in and come out after it is done.
