The VR patent that has surfaced online a few days ago is likely not being used for the console, at least at launch.
Takashi is usually correct on Nintendo info
how the fuck? in that tiny device? nintendo are now wizards
I'll wait until its official but if this is true then the switch will be better than current consoles in just another way :v:
Takashi Mochizuki is pretty much the only journalist I trust when it comes to Nintendo rumours, but this sounds incredibly far fetched. If this ends up being true, this will be a very expensive console.
Why do I have the feeling this thing is going to absolutely terrible with frame rates.
If it has any complex games running at WQHD I'll be very, very surprised.
You can make games that look good without making it a performance hog even at high res. Thinking they might be moving in that direction, there really is little need for most games to use as much power as they do these days. Framerates are a lot more important than resolution for me though so if this is true i cant see myself enjoying the experience if thats what ends up being sacrificed.
I don't know what to believe anymore. First the clock speed rumours and now this.
I mean, not factoring in price, a good chunk of high end phones throw 1440p displays into 5.5" phones and seem to keep stable FPS with just cell hardware, so it's not unheard of or really that unexpected considering it's a game console and not a device for browsing memes. Obviously the Switch is rumored to be 1/2 the cost of most 1440p phones though so I imagine it's unlikely they can maintain stable 30+ at that resolution. It'd be nice but it's likely 1080p. Google Pixel drives very basic 3D VR at 60hz at 1440p for around $700 though heavily overpriced to help fund their other ventures for the phone like the unlimited photo storage, I imagine for $300, Nintendo could offer 30hz at 1440p considering they're saving money on aspects of the Pixel then Switch doesn't use. Though, with the dock and controllers, the price point is too low, so I imagine it'd be a cheaper 1080p display, but should easily handle 60fps.

But yeah Pixels are massively overpriced for what they are, my Axon 7 costs ~$350 in the US and has the same processor with the same sized screen, same RAM, twice the storage, and an SD slot compared to $769 for the Pixel XL. Only real issue 1440p phones have is battery life. Real Racing 3 drains 1% every 2 minutes on my Axon 7. But this is Nintendo, it's going to be underspecced, everything is going to look dated on launch and it's not going to be much better come end of life.
these rumors are all over the place man
They already had me sold when it was announced, each rumor added on top means nothing. Nintendo fangay for life
these rumors are all over the place man
Which is why i take all of them with a grain of salt, and just simply not get too excited. I'm really interested in the Switch. But not to a point of considering it as a Day-one purchase now.
on one hand takashi is usually very reliable and has actual inside sources on the other hand I can't see the switch outputting 2K and remaining an affordable price unless it'll run at like 10 FPS it could SUPPORT 2K though, and never use it though
I don't see how this could reconcile with the earlier rumors that it uses a downclocked Tegra X1, though. Those specs would have it running 1080p with Wii U-class visuals in docked mode, or 900p or lower with more visual detail. 1440p (WQHD) would be very hard for it to handle with any real detail - something like Superhot could run fine at 1440p with those specs, but I wouldn't expect much more. If they did an X1 with a wider GPU, or an X2, that could explain it, though. I'd suspect the former - the X2 is too new, and the lowered clocks even in docked mode seemed a bit fishy to me. Doubling the GPU width and then downclocking it a bit would make much more sense.
You know, Xbox One S supports 4K... Blu Rays and up-scaled games. Maybe this is the same thing and not games running natively at 1440p.

I saw an Australian price for the switch at $1100 It's going to be expensive.
I saw an Australian price for the switch at $1100 It's going to be expensive.
placeholder price
If it actually has 2k and it's intended to run games at 2k, then it's almost certainly based on the yet-to-be-released Tegra X2 and not the Tegra X1 like most of us thought. I'm not holding my breath for that to be true, though.
Who knows, maybe he means the unannounced but probably coming "New" Nintendo Switch. :v:
I saw an Australian price for the switch at $1100 It's going to be expensive.
placeholder prices are always super high just in case.
how the fuck? in that tiny device? nintendo are now wizards
I mean my smartphone can render some impressive looking games at 1080p so I can't say I'm surprised.
placeholder price
Exactly, if the placeholder is that expensive then it will be too Not as expensive but still a lot.
Exactly, if the placeholder is that expensive then it will be too Not as expensive but still a lot.
yeah just like when the ps4 first came out for $900 aus and games costed $118 aus (it actually came out for $549 aus)

It's going to be fucking expensive lol
[del]This is awesome if true, but at the same time, why put it at a resolution which isn't really used for TVs nowadays? The docked output will be too high for your 1080p TV to take full advantage of, and too low for the brand new 4K TVs. Also, [/del]I doubt the undocked console being 1080p will affect the price any. 1080p on a screen that size isn't some grand feat anymore, and you can get tablets with 1080p screens for pretty cheap. Let's just hope the price isn't ridiculous. Nintendo probably knows the sweetspot that their consumers want ($250-$350). Ok, so the hardware can handle 1440p, but will only output at 1080p when docked. Makes a lot more sense.
Why is everyone saying 2K? If anything, that's what 1080p should be called.
