Robert Bailey, 27, told how he was "terrified" but had a duty to keep the teenagers safe. He had just eight minutes to get the class of 42 students to safety. "We first heard a weird cracking noise, then came the violent shaking," he said, describing the moment the earthquake struck on March 11. "I ushered the students outside on to the baseball field so they wouldn't be hit by falling debris." Mr Bailey, who lived in Ofunato with his Japanese wife Mai for four years, said the coastal town's emergency response sirens then sounded a warning that a tsunami was imminent. The teacher described how he looked out to sea and saw a "wall of mist". "This must have been the spray from the tsunami, but it looked so awesome and strange," he said. "It was as if there had been a massive fire on the ocean, and above it were vast, rolling, white clouds of smoke. "In it, I could see thousands of bits, floating. They must have been buildings, ships, cars - but they looked so tiny. It was all so awesome that my brain couldn't compute." He said the students were crying and formed huddles with their friends as they could do nothing but sit and wait for the approaching wave to draw closer. "We didn't know whether we were safe. All we could do was to watch it come towards us and pray we were high enough above it to be okay," he said. Fortunately, they avoided the wave as it passed through the valley below them. But the high school's 137 other students are still unaccounted for. Mr Bailey was not meant to be at the school on the day of the disaster, but he had gone in on his day off to teach the pupils about cricket. He is just one of the countless unsung heroes emerging from the Japanese disaster zone. His mother Ruth Bailey, 50, from Heckington, Sleaford, in Lincolnshire, where Mr Bailey grew up, said she was proud of her son. But she said he had played down his actions, saying he was not a hero. Mrs Bailey, who runs a pharmacy with her husband Kim, 53, said they spent an agonising weekend waiting for news of their son. She said: "I heard the news about the earthquake on Friday when a delivery driver came into our shop and he said, 'I wouldn't want to live in Japan.'" The couple waited anxiously until they finally heard Robert was safe on Monday. His heroic efforts have not stopped, with his mother saying he is now busy trying to trace his missing friends and colleagues. "He has no plans to leave," she said.
Hero, indeed! He looks awesome too.
He reminds me of a younger Zach Galifianakis.
He looks like a not fat Notch
"This must have been the spray from the tsunami, but it looked so awesome and strange," he said.
Takes a lot of balls to appreciate something about to drown you.

You think a school so close to the shore would have more of a plan. Good guy

If fat notch jokes delay scrolls, we need more of them.
Haha I can't believe this thread has turned in 14 posts into a thread ripping on Notch for Scrolls. A game he has no involvement in other than funding its development.

I love stories like this. I hope the other students are okay.
A british teacher in Japan?
A british teacher in Japan?
he was married to a Japanese woman
he was married to a Japanese woman
I don't blame him. British women are ugly.
I can imagine him whispering to himself "I'm British you muppets"

I don't blame him. British women are ugly.
That's like saying American woman are all fat. They're not all fat/ugly. Just MOST of them. Also, this story does not surprise me. Us Brits are immune to everything. Floods, earthquakes, sustained bombing...we seen it all. But we have one weakness... I speak of the dreaded THIN LAYER OF SNOW AND FROST!!!11eleventyone!

That guy seems pretty cool. It's also pretty cool that this song came on when I was reading that.
The beard sealed the deal for me
He deserves an award for that, that's the most heroic thing I've heard in a long time.
