So as I received my brand new MSI GTX970 for Christmas, then my Motherboard seemed to have given up on itself (Can't get to POST, no Beep or POST codes other than 00, tried different PSU, RAM, Etc.) The latest Speccy I've from that machine is a tad old, but still quite relevant: [t]http://i.imgur.com/B0sg3lv.png[/t] As can be seen it's i7 920 with an XFX Motherboard which have been discontinued a long time a go. I would rather go ahead and just buy both a new CPU and Motherboard. But I want my budget to be as low as possible (I've around $500 to spend - But would love if we could get to around $400) - Looking at the i7 920, then I properly need both new MB and CPU as it's an LGA1366, which I don't really see anymore, Now as I've just bought a MSI GPU, why not get a matching Motherboard for that matter (Black+Red), I've looked at MSI Z97 Gaming 5, but this is just somewhat price for me - But just tell me otherwise if it's not :v: The second thing is that I had an i7 before... I do some Movie Editing once in a while, I'm a Programmer and I work with 3D modelling. So I utilize a lot of Processing power. Would an i5 still do me fine in those cases? I would love to spare the money if someone could tell me otherwise, because before I loved having an i7, but if we are talking about only a few seconds of rendering time or likely then I would be fine with i5. [editline]2nd January 2015[/editline] So I'm looking for a new CPU & Motherboard around the $400-500 range. Would like i7, but i5 might be fine enough.
An i5 should be comparable, but an i7 would still be in budget. Do you have a good CPU cooler already that's compatible with 1150? If so you can drop a bit off this price. I have a Be Quite! Dark Rock 3 which I'm quite happy about. How is the i5-4670 compared to the i7-4790? I'm of course about to look into it myself. It's mostly if anyone else have anything to say about the situation - As I didn't plan to spend this extra money and if I can go and live with a i5 anyway without trouble. Then I would definitely do that instead.
Given the clockspeed and architecture differences between the 920 and 4670k, you're probably going to be sitting roughly the same for heavy tasks, and considerably above for gaming.
That actually sounds more than ideal to be honest as was more than happy with the 920 performance except for gaming. That is actually it, thanks Levelog! <3
