If you were one of countless gamers lamenting the loss of Xbox Live and PlayStation Network service in December 2014, justice has been served. Finland has convicted Julius Kivimaki of over 50,000 counts of cyber-crime, including harassment, fraud, and data breaches.

According to Finnish news outlet Keleva, as reported by Daily Dot, Kivimaki’s sentence amounts to two years of suspended sentence.
50,000 counts and no prison sentence? Um... Why?
The title made me think he had broken 50 000 different laws.
I imagine the lack of a real prison sentence was for revealing information about the group and it's members.
He was 15-16 at the time of crime and he is now 17.

In addition he'd already served a month in prison. They also were in favor of the suspended sentence because he apparently showed remorse and an understanding of why what he did was wrong.
And besides what would locking him up do?

The guy was charged with 50,000 counts of cyber-crime. And just look at the Lizard Squad Twitter, they think they have free passes to do stuff like that. I can bet you that giving him a "2 year suspension" isn't going to do anything other than land him right back into the cyber crime industry with Lizard Squad after that 2 years is up.
Locking them up is to prove a point, it's a sentence for a crime. Just because it was a cyber crime doesn't mean it's any less worthy of a prison sentence. There's a reason the saying "if you can't do the time, don't do the crime" exists.

Sentences in Europe generally don't stack like they do in the US.
Basically a "work for the FBI or we'll fucking execute you" sentence.
to be honest with you, fraud is the one crime he committed that i would be most concerned about.

This is how broken the justice system is in Finland. You can rape and/or kill someone drunk driving and you'll either get a suspended sentence or just 1-2 years. But god forbid you evade taxes, that's 5-10 years in the cubes.
Basically a "work for the FBI or we'll fucking execute you" sentence.
Why would the FBI want him? I literally didn't see their group do anything impressive, DDOSing and DOXing isn't stuff the FBI usually finds useful
Well it's not like he's a dangerous murderer who will kill again and needs to be kept in prison to keep society safe

i was not aware the FBI commonly outsourced to finland

A month in jail. Not prison. I would sure hope Finland doesnt put those awaiting trial in a prison. I sure hope Finland doesnt put people who will spend less than a year incarcerated in prison.

you don't understand facepunch's hatred for OUTRAGOUSLY SMUG SCRIPT KIDDIES

Don't think he deserves to have his life ruined for something he was no doubt coerced into doing by some other script kiddies and probably didn't realize the impacts of his actions.

I wouldn't be so soft on him, he knew exactly what he was doing.
He probably cut a deal to give up his friends and being a minor and it being Finland got off light.
I'm just happy that this shit is over for now
Locking them up is to prove a point
To prove the point that the justice system can punish you as they see fit?
I'm so glad in most of Europe the system is not as broken as in the States...
The justice system should not punish someone to deter others from commiting a crime. This is not justice.
The justice system should hand out sentences that coincide with the law. Even if he was a smug ass about hacking stuff he should not be thrown into a dark hole to "show him".
I don't know why some people don't see that someone who makes a mistake is able to change if he or she recieves propper support. For me a justice system that changes criminals is far superior to one that just wants to crush them for vengeance.
He's a minor and probably cut a deal to snitch others out (wasn't there news about this?), the sentence makes sense.

Let their twitter bark, pissing people off is exactly what they want.

You need to be really fucking immature to participate in this kind of stuff, there is nothing to gain, other then being a "bad-ass edgelord" on the internet.
While at the same time you increase your chance of getting caught by a thousandfold.
Fuck those guys, hacktivism is one thing but attacking kids getting new consoles for christmas for the luls is fucking dumb.

yep, these kids have some serious issues.

Really depends. A lot of kids grow out of this sort of shit. Admittedly most kids don't start out doing anything quite so high profile though.
I doubt he'll get back into it. He's probably scared shitless of going through the same ordeal again after this.

Ikr, my brother keeps saying that lizard and anon are like on par with state-sponsered cyber espianoge machines and I can't explain how wrong he is
I wouldn't be so soft on him, he knew exactly what he was doing.
If you did some (honestly pretty bad) stupid computer hacking shit when you were a kid, would you want to still be locked up when you were 25 over it? I hope when he's grown, or maybe even already, he'll realize how much of an idiot he is/was.
i was not aware the FBI commonly outsourced to finland
Nah nah, Finnish Bureau of Investigations.
If he tried to get back into it, they'd probably finnish him.
