The Food and Drug Administration has announced plans to have so-called "partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs)," which are the main source of artificial trans fats in processed foods, to be classified as food additives. That means they won't be allowed to be used in food without authorization of the FDA, which may effectively ban the substances. Before anyone says that this is some sort of "Nanny State" thing or something that will make food taste worst, it's important to point out that Trans Fats aren't regular fats; they're a preservative which appears in nature in only trace amounts. The health risks associated with regular trans fat consumption are really severe and other food additives have been banned for way less.
