• Family receives text message from dead, buried grandmother
A woman grieving the death of her beloved grandmother often texted a mobile phone she was buried with — but her blood ran cold when she got a reply. Lesley Emerson, 59, died from bowel cancer in June 2011 and her relatives put her phone into her coffin because she loved texting family members, according to The Shields Gazette. Sheri Emerson’s uncle, Graham Emerson, called the number and spoke to a man who said he’d used the phone for several weeks. He said he responded to Sheri Emerson’s texts because he thought they were a hoax.
Source
So, the company gives the number of a phone no longer in use to someone else, and people get pissed about it? I mean it's not like someone dug up the phone and gave it to someone. It's just the number

I hope they file for some sort of grievance. Imagine having your only source of solace be not only tarnished, but in such a awful manner.
They were actively paying to keep the number in use.
That's gotta be the dumbest thing.
They were actively paying to keep the number in use, and the company still sold the number.
Oh, must've missed that part. Well then yea the phone company is in fault. Though it's kinda silly to keep a phone number, those are expensive.
They were actively paying to keep the number in use, and the company still sold the number.
they might have turned to sell the number because the phone it was attached to hasn't powered back on in X amount of time, though if the family was still making regular payments I'm not sure why they wouldn't notify them before cutting it out of their contract, let alone the implication that they never stopped taking the payments on it
They should sue the phone company for selling a number they were paying for, and not alerting them or stopping the payments.
I wonder if the phone company tried notifying them by sending a text to the grandmother's phone
This happened to me a few times. A girl in the area died a few years ago, and they buried her with her phone, all that stuff. IDK if they kept her number in service, though. Well, eventually the number got sold. A few months later, a girl calls me. I answer, and we're both really confused. She texts an explanation to me (she wanted to hear her friend's away message), and later on the deceased girl's mom calls my phone and explains everything to me and to my mom. Last year I got butt dialed by her brother. Didn't know who it was, so I texted him. He said that he still keeps her number in his contacts. I wonder if this is a common thing?
The first text seems kinda sweet, but then the second one dropped it quickly

You lose someone you loved and alot of people don't realize you won't be able to hear their voice ever again, except for their voice mail or recordings.
Technically speaking, when a phone (Pay as you go) doesn't do anything, that is, sending data, making phone calls or an SMS message, the SIM will go dormant, this usually takes around 6 months. When that number is detached from the SIM, the account tied into that SIM will be wiped, and a new SIM is generated from that number. This is probably what's happpened here. So if they were topping up the phone and buying bundles or whatnot for the phone, it wouldn't matter as the SIM is still being inactive, when I was working at vodafone, I got slated so many times from customers due to the fact that people left their SIM in a closet for "emergency situations" with around £30 credit on it. Only to find out that when they actually need it, that £30 credit is no longer theirs and the SIM is useless, and no, you can't get a refund from that credit.
Imagine coming from a funeral and then getting a text from the man who was buried "k back"
sniffs Lawsuit material.
Nonono you see, the payments were just uh... lost. Yeah, lost. In the massive paperwork piles. And we can't find it. Ever.

Something somewhat similar happened to me earlier this year, my mother passed away in February. I had her added on skype for one reason or another (we lived in the same house seems kind of silly now) but on her birthday her Skype window popped up and reminded me it was her birthday, sent a chill down my spine.
Called my Grandmother's house a few weeks ago, got a voice mail with my dead Grandfather's voice. Not too fun.
They were actively paying to keep the number in use, and the company still sold the number.
Paying is not enough. A phone contract can't be in the names of a dead person. It has to be transferred into someone else's name or the company can close it.
