Cheques will be phased out by October 31 2018, the UK's Payments Council has announced.
The 15-strong body, comprising members of the banking industry, said cheques were in "long-term, terminal decline".
Chief executive Paul Smee said: "There are many more efficient ways of making payments than by paper in the 21st century, and the time is ripe for the economy as a whole to reap the benefits of its replacement."
The Payments Council has faced opposition from businesses and charities who argue that they will lose out when individuals can no longer use cheques for payments or contributions.
But it vowed to work over the next nine years to "promote and explain" alternatives.
"The goal is to ensure that by 2018 there is no scenario where customers, individuals or businesses, still need to use a cheque," the Payments Council said in a statement.
"The Board will be especially concerned that the needs of elderly and vulnerable people are met."
Cheque usage has been falling by around 10% a year as debit cards gain ascendancy.
But, despite that, some four million transactions a day are still carried out by cheque.
The Federation of Small Businesses said it was disappointed by the decision to phase out paper payments.
"It's something that's going to impact heavily on small businesses and their customers," said a spokeswoman.
The needs of the elderly and the disabled must also be considered, the charity Age Concern warned.
"Chip and pin is problematic for many older and housebound people and we know 6.4 million over 65s have never used the internet," said a spokeswoman.
"Without cheques, we are very concerned people will be forced to keep large amounts of cash in their home, leaving them vulnerable to theft and financial abuse."
Cheques are very infrequently used in countries such as Sweden and Norway and their use is under review in Ireland, South Africa and Australia.
In Britain cheque use peaked in 1990, when an average of 10.9 million cheques were issued per day in 1990. By 2008 there were just 3.8 million a day.
I spelt the word "Cheques" correctly. You Americans use the word "check" for money uses, to "tick" something and to check over something.
Forcing people to use a new method of payment? I don't like that idea.
My father's gonna be pissed.
If it goes worldwide.
I always use cheques for deposits or whatever. That way I can take something out without handing over any actual money.
anyone who has a checking account has access to a debit card(or they should), so why would you need checks?
Yep. I haven't used a check since... err I don't think I've ever used a check before! :S
From the title I didn't understand what the fuck this was about, then I saw it is the rest of the worlds way of spelling "check". I don't see anything wrong with them getting rid of them. I mean, anyone who has a checking account has access to a debit card(or they should), so why would you need checks?
To pay bills? Some people still prefer to write checks for bills and other things. They should be allowed to write a check if they please. The government should fuck off.
Nobody actually uses them to tell the truth.
Cheques are good because when you're writing one out, you know how much your spending. With credit cards you just swipe swipe swipe and get a bill.

I'm sensible enough to use a card, but not everyone is.
You can pay your bills online with your debit card. You don't need checks for anything anymore.
Not everyone wants to pay their bills online. They shouldn't be forced to either.

There are so many incompetent people who don't know how to use a PC. They still pay their bills with checks.

I'm sure by 2018 most of the old folks around will know how to use a PC. The ones who don't won't be around any longer, so IMO this looks fine to me.

Then tell them to get with the times. It's their own damn fault for not progressing with the rest of the world.
I've never used a cheque to buy stuff at a shop, but they're good if you're sending large sums of money by mail. I get £100 from a relative every year, and if the cash went missing...

Yeah, let's teach some 80 year old how to use a computer to pay their bills online. God damn, you people are so close-minded and lack the ability to see the other side. I will never use checks and their use is dwindling, but that doesn't mean we should just get rid of them. There are still a lot of people that rely on them. The government needs to fuck off and let people use checks if they please.
Whoever rated me bad spelling is an idiot.

Are cheque transaction records stored electronically like debit cards?
Are cheque transaction records stored electronically like debit cards?
Yes, since money doesn't magically disappear from the bank account while being untraceable.

Cash is king. Everything else leaves a trail.

Dave was right all the time...
Good. Checks are a huge fraudulent issue here. I work at a retail store and it kills me every time somebody uses a check. 50% of the time I have to call Telecheck and confirm every single detail with them before I can finish with the customer, which often takes 10 minutes at least. Even then, filling out the check is unnecessary because VeriSign and Telecheck actually just scan the routing number and account number on the checks and they act like one time use debit cards, drawing the money strait from the account. All the customer has to do is sign the signature pad. I even give them their check back (voided of coruse) after the transaction is done.

I was gonna start off on some rant about the government wanting as many transactions as possible to be recorded and reported to them, but in that case this doesn't change much. The biggest impact it will have is that people can't float cheques (i.e. "It's in the mail") anymore. Even that effect is minimal because cheque transactions nowadays are processed electronically with the same speed of a debit card.
So, meh. The only people that still use cheques in anything but paying bills through the mail are old people who refuse to change to something more efficient.

This is just another move by the government to control people's lives.

Actually it's the bankers.
Bankers shouldn't be able to have a say on anything.
Cheques were useful for one thing: Floating, other than that they're a hassle to be quite honest, trying to balance a budget by predicting when they'll be cashed, and the more you write the more difficult it can be, the only real upside to them is being able to pay for stuff on the weekends with them knowing they can't be cashed until Monday, when the banks open so you have time to put money in the bank
And in a world where everything's going digital, we won't even have paper currency in another 40-50 years
Hell, Paycheck was direct deposited into bank account, and I ordered a new PC a few hours ago from my chair from this PC, The only thing that changed? Numbers in a computer somewhere

If they can't control their spending more fool them, and they could screw a cheque up.

The new world order'll remove methods of payment that aren't popular and a bit of a waste of time? Oh my god!
