Vancouver fire Capt. Gabe Roder said firefighters were called out to the two-alarm blaze around midnight at Pipeline Road and Rose Garden Lane. Roder said a citizen who was in the park at the time called 911. The two firefighters were taken to St. Paul’s Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, one for burns on the hand and the other for a twisted knee. They have since been released. When firefighters arrived the vacant one-story building was engulfed in flames, reportedly as high as five metres. “Once firefighters gained access to the site they extinguished the flames,” said Roder, adding there is extensive damage to the building and three surrounding trees. Roder said investigators have determined the fire was deliberately set. He could not say what started the fire, citing an ongoing investigation. No motive has been determined. “The building is a writeoff and the damage extensive,” he said. Roder said the cooler weather helped to prevent what could have been a major catastrophe in the park. “Had it been in the middle of summer in a dry spell the outcome could have been much different,” he said. The Vancouver fire department is asking people to call 911 as soon as possible if they see smoke or brush smoldering. “The quicker we can get to something that may have been caused by a cigarette or something else, the better chance we have of preventing a major catastrophe.” The miniature train is a popular ride in Stanley Park’s Klahowya Aboriginal Village and attracts huge crowds during its Halloween- and Christmas-themed train rides. The area destroyed was the train platform where people lined up to get on the miniature train. At Christmastime, often kids sang carols on the platform while waiting for the Christmas train. Joyce Courtney, a spokeswoman for the Vancouver park board, said staff is waiting for police to clear the area as safe before resuming operations on the Spirit Catcher train, which has just opened on Thursday. “We anticipate full operations by tomorrow,” she said Friday. There was no damage to the train or to the tracks, she said. That park is fucking riddled with hobo shacks and tents if you wander more than 40 feet off any path.
Something was suspicious about the fire... it was green
What would motivate someone to do this? I can just picture some drunk hobo staggering up to the gorilla cutout, yelling at it for eyeballing him, getting into a drunken rage and setting the place on fire.

Its a shame, I loved to ride on that train when I was younger. Although at first I thought it was a model train building like what Granville island has that got torched.
