• Very strange minecraft server connection issues

So I've been running a minecraft server on and off over the past few months, and up until about a month or so ago it was all fine and worked perfectly. Then we got a new router (a Netgear WNR3500L) to replace our old one (WGR614 v6) and suddenly something hasn't been right. I can connect to the MC server myself just fine, using both my external and LAN IPs, but when other people try to connect it gives the error "Connection timed out: connect". Now, I can tell you that everything, literally everything is set up properly: port 25565 is forwarded (TCP and UDP), the server.properties is fine and dandy, and the firewall exceptions seem to be properly set. I'm really getting annoyed at this, because it seems like I've tried everything short of putting the old router back into commission. At present, I'm thinking it's either the router or my ISP, though I can't seem to find anything terribly wrong with either. All the online port checker utilities I've tried have told me that port 25565 is closed, then they also tell me that port 80 is closed (when, if I recall, it shouldn't be). Having my friend ping my IP gives a "Request timed out.", but by the same token, pinging my friend does that too, which leads me to believe that it does so for everyone, rendering that test pretty useless. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. this problem just happened out of the blue, with no visible source or cause. I'm no network technician, but I do know the basics of setting up a minecraft server. This, however, has me stumped, and I'm sure it's probably something small that I've missed...
Does the new router have a built-in firewall? That could be blocking things.
Well, in the router config there's no tab for the firewall, so I'm not sure where it's gone (I'm pretty sure there is one, there appears to be no way to access the options for it though). The Block Services tab tells me it's not blocking anything.
I don't think your ISP is blocking random ports, so there's most likely some config problem with the router. I really hate hardware routers, they don't maintain a consistent interface and always skimp on the features. I built my own router long ago so I don't have to deal with such problems anymore

Every one I know who's bought a new router has had better functionality with their old one and usually end up using the old one anyway. My WRT54g wireless router still works great and it's been quite a few years.
I've come to the conclusion that the old Firewall tab has been split into various other tabs including the aforementioned Block Services tab. I've checked all of these and it seems nothing is wrong with the router on the firewall side of things. Obviously I've ruled out the ISP as well. I've turned the option to respond to pings on on the router. On top of that, I can now no longer connect to the server using the external IP. It gives a "Connection timed out: connect" error. I set up the server on my laptop, port forwarded and everything, and connected to it from my desktop using the external IP - it works. Now I really don't know what's going on.
No. It's that your motherboard/your computer has a atheros/realtek network adapter, my computer had a atheros network adapter, I got a intel adapter, then I stopped having this problem. It's your network adapter.

I do have a realtek adapter, but the thing is I'm actually using a netgear WG311T wifi adapter (for now). Also, I've had my friend try connecting to the laptop's server, still no dice. I think this pretty much points the finger at the router. I'll try replacing it with the old one when I get the chance.
Turn off DDoS protection on the router, see if that helps
You have forwarded ports on both the router and in windows firewall? I never used to remember to do windows firewall and i'd waste half of my day trying to figure it out.
Right, I'm not sure what I did, but apparently it worked. People can now connect to the server, it's all working again. I disabled port scanning and DoS protection, tried it to no avail, turned it back on, restarted the router (unplugged it and plugged it back in again after a couple of seconds), then remapped the port forwarding to 25567 (and changed it in server.properties, of course). Suddenly, it's like nothing ever happened. I'm guessing it's either the ports 25565/25566 being blocked by my isp (for god knows what reason, it's bigpond by the way), or the router being restarted. This was actually similar to the problem with the old router - it kept dropping out occasionally and only a physical reboot would solve it.
