Really wondering what arma2 is gonna do because of it's huge playerbase (DayZ and all that).

Pretty sure Bohemia Interactive will probably switch ARMA to something else.

Well obviously, it'd be a horrible move of them to just cut off that huge playerbase, sucks that they can't integrate it with steamworks though.
RIP Halo CE servers. I had a fun time
Good news, everyone! Battlefront I and II actually have dedicated hosting software (Not Gamespy) built into the game, so you don't have to worry about losing those.
ARMA and ARMA II also feature a dedicated server, so they'll be relatively unaffected.
Bungie still offers server software for Halo CE...
I think we'll be fine.

It's already been confirmed that Arma 2 is moving to Steamworks.

Dosen't gamespy supply the master server for which all other servers ping to so that others can find their server?
Dosen't gamespy supply the master server for which all other servers ping to so that others can find their server?
For some of them, yes. For others, it's peer-to-peer.

This is the official post from BI's CEO: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?175463-End-of-Gamespy
This is going to affect multiplayer in our games that use Gamespy for matchmaking, cd keys authentification and NAT traversal from Arma: Resistance to Arma 3. We are planning to introduce an alternative solution using Steam to Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead and Arma 3 users.
Other games (Take On Helicopters, Arma 2, Arma 2: Free, Arma, Arma: Cold War Assault) will have more limited multiplayer experience with loss of server browser, cd key authentification and NAT traversal systems. That said, direct IP connection to servers should work even after Gamespy services are no longer available.
You know, you say that jokingly, but during high school, a lot of my friends did Halo CE LANs in study hall until the principal decided to ban laptops during school time.
Already working on a solution for AvP2.
Gamespy was originally made to stop having to look on the internet for a Quake server.
Now a lot of games rely on that again.
I'll miss WELCOME TO GAMESPY.

So what happens to those that didn't buy arma2/arma2:OA on steam like myself?
And how's Gearbox going to handle the Borderlands situation?
I think it's important that future developers look at this and learn from it. Incorporate some sort of Peer to Peer server browser, and give consumers the ability to host servers themselves.
I highly doubt that'll end up being the case, however, and we'll see a significant portion of this generation of gaming just sort of die because of it.
It's not a massive deal, the existent communities could easily move over to something like Gameranger or Tunngle to continue playing.
Ah, this makes Nintendo's WFC shutdown make a lot more sense, since apparently most of their online infrastructure was ran by GameSpy. Now I'm not so upset with Nintendo; they probably have to let it go and the effort to build a new network just to run old games wouldn't be worth it.
In the meantime I've been playing as much Mario Kart Wii as I can. Gonna miss it. :(
Dosen't gamespy supply the master server for which all other servers ping to so that others can find their server?
They did both, so for games that relied on them for running servers, they're screwed, but for games that did their own servers or had dedicated server software, all this will do is break the server browser.
And how's Gearbox going to handle the Borderlands situation?
Doubt they will at all, they're not a company known for being thorough.
Not like BL's online integration was any good to begin with.
RIP Flight Simulator X.

Those were the days.
Seems like solutions like X link Kai might be of need here.
RIP Postal 2 multiplayer

Isn't RWS actively updating the game.
I'm sure they will move to Steamworks.
