• Work + new Post Office + armed robbery = oh shit?

So, I work part time at a building that's primary function is to hire rooms out... it has a sports hall etc, I work evening shifts alone. The committee who run the building have recently decided to invest in a Post Office, which is to be within the building. Post Office armed robberies in the UK, and the area in which I live are pretty high... which is no doubt due to the large amount of cash stored in the Post Office safe and all the scumbags who make it their life long ambition to steal a large sumn of money. I have various things to do whilst I'm working... setting up rooms for the next day, moving equipment etc. If people need to enter the building, I have to let them in... most often than not I don't have a clue who they are. Additionally people can exit through the locked main doors by hitting a button, which would be an opertune moment for someone to enter the building as someone is exiting, and I wouldn't have a clue they had even entered. I won't have any access to the Post Office itself, or it's safe... but I'm worried I'd be unable to convince a potential theif of that, and that I'd be beaten, stabbed or shot as a result. My pay is as low as it could legally be for a 19 year old such as myself, at £4.98 an hour. So fellow Facepunchers, are my fears warrented? Would you be the slightest bit worried if you were in my position?
Do they not have any protocol in place or instructions on what to do if anything like that happens? IMO you don't have anything to worry about.
Buy a gun
Buy a gun
He's in the UK. edit - and how the hell would a gun help him? If an armed robber is pointing a gun at him, you think they'll give him time to pull his own gun out?
Buy a gun
Read the post.
He's in the UK.
And your point is? [editline]27th February 2012[/editline] Well obviously, you never put your gun away then you don't need to draw it.
And your point is? [editline]27th February 2012[/editline] Well obviously, you never put your gun away then you don't need to draw it.
It's illegal to carry firearms in the UK.
NO SHIT and you thinking im serious... I QUIT
NO SHIT and you thinking im serious... I QUIT
Sarcasm doesn't translate well on the internet. edit - Going back to the original topic, I should talk to your employer and ask him what you should do in that situation.
Isn't this an example of an unsafe workplace?
The store opposite my house got raided in an armed robbery last night. I was going to go the shop - thank god I didn't. I would have been in there and panicked like hell. They used a gun and a knife and there were riot vans and helicopters everywhere.
Take martial arts lessons.
Don't be a hero and do what they say. I don't think many will blame you if you bring them to the safe.
"I won't have any access to the Post Office itself, or it's safe... but I'm worried I'd be unable to convince a potential theif of that, and that I'd be beaten, stabbed or shot as a result."
The problem is, the entire management of the place are stupid as hell. From conversations i've had with them it's as though they don't even see security at night as an issue. The building has security cameras, but they're so unclear that they are useless. The main, and only door is secured with an electromagnetic lock which given enough force, can be pulled open. But my main concern is locking up the building at night, alone in a dark car park. Basically the people who manage the building claim that because the Post Office safe is time locked, the welfare of the staff isn't an issue? I just don't know what to do? :S
Give it a little while and see what you think, but it this rate it seems like you're always going to be on edge and it'll stress you out.
Give it a little while and see what you think, but it this rate it seems like you're always going to be on edge and it'll stress you out.
Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking... It's just hard to find another part time job that will work around the days i'm at uni... So i'm pretty screwed. :S
Emptying your pockets and showing every cabinet shouldn't be that hard when you are pissing your pants.
Things can still get out of hand, the robber will potentially be bad tempered/impatient and will perhaps make you look elsewhere too. Hell, even if he can convince the robbers he has no access to keys, I wouldn't want a job where I get a gun pointed at my face.
there is nothing you can really do apart from asking for a panic button to be installed or several for that matter
Isn't the window between you and the customers supposed to be bullet-proof incase this happens, or atleast able to take a few shots before going down, giving you time to hide?

Any robber dumb enough not to do his research beforehand is not a robber worth worrying about Well, actually the last line might not be true in all cases BUT on a more serious note perhaps try and get them to put a sign up saying that no one has access to the safe at night or something

Oh, you can't? Hey guys lets kick the shit out of him and take his stuff!" Not to discourage OP from his job or anything.
If you feel unsafe working, then you should continue to take it up with your management. If they aren't willing to take any precautions or listen to your input, then you should probably find another job.

Someones been shot and/or stabbed and there are helicopters, police tape, riot vans and a CSI guy out and about. The amount of police cars I've seen go down my road is ridiculous. The gun was found ditched on my road.

The post office in my village has been ram-raided/robbed 5 times in the past like 6 or 7 years. They keep building bigger shields but they just use bigger cars
simple get a NEW FUCKING JOB.
Whip your gun out, if you know what I mean and hope it'll distract the robbers then run away.
Whip your gun out, if you know what I mean and hope it'll distract the robbers then run away.
Brilliant.
I'd really recommend you get a different workplace soon. The amount of pay you're getting really isn't worth the stress.
