• UNESCO rejects Abbott's bid to delist Tasmanian World Heritage forest
The Federal Government has lost a bid to delist more than 70,000 hectares of forest from Tasmania's World Heritage Area (WHA). The United Nations' World Heritage Committee, meeting in Doha, took just 10 minutes to reject the Government's application to reverse protection for 74,000 hectares. The area was part of 170,000 hectares added to the WHA last year under Tasmania's forest peace deal enacted by the former state and federal Labor governments. News of the decision was quickly welcomed by conservation groups, including former Greens leader Bob Brown who described the decision as a "global diplomatic humiliation" for the Abbott Government. The Coalition had argued the 74,000 hectares were degraded by previous logging and should be unlocked for the timber industry. But opponents to the move said only 8.6 per cent of the forests had been disturbed, with the rest being pristine old-growth rainforest. Speaking from Doha, delegates from Portugal said "accepting this delisting would set an unacceptable precedent". Wilderness Society campaign manager Vica Bayley said the decision showed the world was behind preserving the forest. "Over here in Doha, environmentalists and Aboriginal Tasmanians are together welcoming this decision because it does protect the integrity of the Tasmanian World Heritage Area and it would protect that in perpetuity," he said.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-06-24/unesco-rejects-bid-to-delist-world-heritage-forest/5538946 This is a great result, especially how it took only 10 minutes to evaluate.
Abbott seems to be really hell bent on fucking up Australia's ecosystem
How have you not gotten rid of this man?
Don't forget these were previous logging areas. Basically all that area only became "heritage forest" less than a couple years ago. They were aiming at reinstating the areas without regrowth to maintain jobs for growing plantations / logging. They sill have a surplus of world heritage land compared to a few years ago. Decent outcome though. Maybe they should instead take that 8.6% off the world heritage listed forests for logging and plantations, would make sense.
How have you not gotten rid of this man?
If only it was that easy.
Isn't this the same forest the government told people not to touch because of that dam?

Why isn't doing anything that is harmful against the planet and humanity a crime yet? As in, you can be locked up in prison for a very long time for stuff like this.
Abbott seems to be really hell bent on fucking up Australia's ecosystem
I'm really hoping that he isn't allowed to touch the Great Barrier Reef. That's one of the natural great wonders of the world for goodness sake.
I'm really hoping that he isn't allowed to touch the Great Barrier Reef. That's one of the natural great wonders of the world for goodness sake.
Sadly, He doesn't give a fuck about it.
Apparently it might be on the world heritage list by next year, why it's not on now I really don't know.
I hope people speak up about the reef. Send a clear message that they can't ignore. There is no justifiable reason to touch the reef or leave it unprotected I highly doubt Abbott will screw around the reef though, that is straight up political suicide, hopefully he knows that too
How have you not gotten rid of this man?
I am guessing they need to wait until to the next election date.?
How have you not gotten rid of this man?
We can't unfortunately. He still has two years before the election and we can't force an election by ourselves. We have to wait for the Governor General to do it. Come one General Cosgrove, disband parliament.

Is this applicable? I don't know much about Australian politics, but wasn't Rudd obviously better than Abbott?
Everyone was obviously better than him

I don't know much about Australian politics, but wasn't Rudd obviously better than Abbott?
Rudd was a meglomaniac. Terrible for developing policy but most people can't help but love him. He's just so up himself with enough intelligence to make it seem reasonable. Tony has been (until more recently) a lot better at unity than Kevin ever was and hence why he's still well and truly in with a chance. Australians for the most part are heartless thanks to both sides of politics vilifying certain things in a bipartisan manner. As long as the LNP remain unified they will perform well at the next election. Enough to win? That depends on their competancy to stop doing dumb stuff. Which is, fortunately, very low.

Problem was that he sucked behind closed doors and was said to be very angry People gave him a lot of shit for the above video just for being human, every politician would act like this behind closed doors, hell who doesn't like to let go of steam when they're alone. It's normal. Rudd just was an angry man but had a kind heart, he's never going to run for PM again, I don't know how I feel about Shorten as a PM tho but hell he'd be better than Abbott
Enough with this "independent," bollocks, just rejoin the Empire. Please we miss you please
Abbott seems to be really hell bent on fucking up Australia's everything
fixed that for you
Abbott's very blatantly corrupt.
Abbott's very blatantly corrupt.
No, he's just stupid and out of touch.
Apparently it might be on the world heritage list by next year, why it's not on now I really don't know.
Don't worry man, only 5 planned oil ports across that area, but to be fair, Oil Ports bring more tourism cash than some shitty reef. FFS replied to the wrong post of yours.
Don't worry man, only 5 planned oil ports across that area, but to be fair, Oil Ports bring more tourism cash than some shitty reef. ...
And dredging a reef can't possibly cause any damage, it's a win-win!
