Honestly when I see these stories where cats get killed/hurt by somebody I blame the owners more than the sociopath. You let your cats roam outside and they will get killed/disappear one day.

This picture always seems odd to me, my squirrel looked nothing like that as a baby. Mine did not get fur that thick till she was quite a bit bigger than that.
