• Fastest Linux?

As it seems I can't get any goddamn drivers to work on my PC I just... give up, and I'm just gonna switch over to Linux and STAY there... So I used Linux, and I find it's kinda slow. I was thinking Xubuntu, but if you know something similiar to Ubuntu, that is about as simple but faster - please tell me what to use.
What are your specs? Your computer may just be shit.
2.6.33 I would imagine.
If you get gentoo customized correctly it can be one of the fastest. Also I would make a thread in the linux thread because you will get people with personal experience.
What are your specs? Your computer may just be shit.
Intel Pentium 4 Processor at 2.80GHz (Dual?) 248MB Random Access Memory (NOT 2048MB) I already used Ubuntu, but that shit's just waaaay to slow on that rig. I need something fast and efficiant that works good on that rig until I can buy a RAM memory...
OP has no idea that linux is different than windows i bet [editline]08:55PM[/editline]
Intel Pentium 4 Processor at 2.80GHz (Dual?) 248MB Random Access Memory (NOT 2048MB) I already used Ubuntu, but that shit's just waaaay to slow on that rig. HEY, IT ONLY COST ME TEN BUCKS, CUT ME SOME SLACK >:C [editline]09:59PM[/editline] And btw, I won't build a new PC. I'll spend 20 bucks on a new RAM stick and VOILA it's a lot better. [editline]10:05PM[/editline] Is Arch Linux anything good?
my old shitty laptop with 192mb of ram runs arch with awesome. granted anything open while firefox is open more or less kills it, but it runs
Arch... I'm downloading it ATM, because everyone says it's good.

wmii or openbox + arch mb
Of course it'll still be crap, but if I upgrade the RAM it'll at least be faster. And thanks for the tip. [editline]10:45PM[/editline] Ugh... Arch Linux Live Distro is just a bunch of text... I don't understand half of the options...

Well then, I'll jus turn to muh good friend Xubuntu then. Arch seems to advanced.
2.6.33 I would imagine.
Performance from release to release can vary at certain things. For example Apache performance may increase in the next release, but MySQL performance may decrease. Picking the "fastest" kernel really depends on what you're going to do.
I always found CrunchBang Linux to be good for lower spec PCs. http://crunchbanglinux.org/
you could always try damn small linux.
Yes DSL is a good distro for old computers. Also if you put some ram in that dinosaur than maybe it will run a lot faster and better.
DSL is shitty and limited, he has a P4 not a P2. Xubuntu is decent if you're a new user.
Arch... I'm downloading it ATM, because everyone says it's good.
If you have never used linux before there is no way you will get arch to work.
You could give Puppy Linux a go, it's about as lightweight as DSL but does a lot more stuff, and is actually pretty nice to use.
SliTaz. Plenty of features (good web browser, text editor, etc.), low RAM usage (roughly 20 MB on idle), and extremely small download (10 MB). I would go with the SliTaz cooking, and not the current stable release.
I already have Xubuntu up and running now. Thank you anyways!
Have fun.
If you have never used linux before there is no way you will get arch to work.
I disagree with this. It was the first linux distro that I got my hands dirty with. Then gentoo. It really depends on getting your head wrapped around it.
It really depends on getting your head wrapped around it.
Normal people just want shit that works. hence why Ubuntu is so popular, there's even a nice GUI to use when installing it.
Fedora is quite nice.
Puppy Linux. http://puppylinux.org/main/index.php?file=Download%20Latest%20Release.htm
Fedora is quite nice.
It really is, but OP's computer specs wil not allow fedora to run smoothly.
I don't know why everyone has decided that his computer is completely useless. I got compiz to work (smoothly, unless you made the cube transparent or lit everything on fire), a few years ago, on a box with a 4MB video card and 512MB of ram. He has a bit less ram but he doesn't need ludicrous amounts of eyecandy. He can use wmii, or some other tiling window manager, or openbox. It's not that hard. For $10, that computer is awesome.
