• The city of Vacouver desperate for snow

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Organizers of next month's 2010 Winter Olympics in unseasonably balmy Vancouver have passed beyond the nervous stage - now they’re getting desperate. The reason: There isn't enough snow on Cypress Mountain, one of the featured venues of the games, where very popular downhill-skiing and snowboarding events are supposed to take place. And weather forecasts call for little or no snow before the Olympics kick off on Feb. 12. So game organizers are trucking in tons of fresh snow from higher elevations - and hoping it doesn't melt. They're also substituting straw to reduce the amount of snow needed as a foundation for a slalom course. And a 22-foot diameter pipe is being used instead of snow as a base for snowboard freestyle events. The city of Vancouver, like Seattle, is experiencing a unusually mild January - perhaps the warmest on record. Crocuses and some ornamental fruit trees are already blooming. Daffodils and tulips have sprouted, and daily temperatures routinely peak well above 50 degrees. Temperatures on Cypress Mountain itself are hovering above 45 degrees and expected to remain there for the foreseeable future, according to forecasters. That - along with the potential for rain - bodes ill for natural snow or the man-made variety. Meteorologists are blaming the lack of snow on this year's El Nino weather pattern, which typically means warmer temperatures, overall drier conditions and less snow in the mountains in this part of the world. "We are amazingly above-normal," said Cliff Mass, professor of atmospheric science at the University of Washington. "I can see in my own garden, the bulbs are pushing up." But Olympics organizers say they have the will and the technology to create enough snow for the Cypress Mountain events. So far, they have shut down the mountain to recreational skiers in order to preserve what little snow is left. And they have managed to store some snow locally, But that's not enough - so now they're switching to Plan B, which calls for literally moving tons of fresh snow by truck and helicopter from higher elevations. It's a monumental undertaking, but Olympics officials are projecting confidence that everything will work out. Cathy Priestner Allinger, Vancouver's executive vice president for sport and games operations, says: "Our team at Cypress Mountain is working around the clock ... and we’re confident that these efforts will pay off. And at Whistler Mountain - 100 miles farther north and higher in elevation - there is plenty of snow for the events scheduled to take place there. I live here, and I have to admit, the lack of snow sucks.
I live in Victoria which is about an hour away, and It is very warm, it is like 13 degrees here. (55F). There's no way were getting snow.
I heard they were flying snow in by helicopters. Which is pretty ridiculous.
In jolly old Canada it used to snow. Then global warming came, and now it just rains. How depressing.
I'm a Vancouverite too. Last year we had shitloads of snow and now barely a peep. This sucks.
They can take ours, if they want it. It's getting brown and ugly.
Fuck you guys, in Australia we get... Guess what? NO MOTHERFUCKING SNOW Except for mountains, but they're TINY. Be appreciative you spoilt punks.
Make snow.
Make snow.
Thats the last resort I think.
They should steal it, and should start with my street when they are doing it.
Yes the Snow is melting here in Michigan too :(
A lot of people live in Vancouver. We should have a Seattle meet up.
Fuck you guys, in Australia we get... Guess what? NO MOTHERFUCKING SNOW Except for mountains, but they're TINY. Be appreciative you spoilt punks.
You're better off without it.
It's 50 fucking degrees here in St. Louis. I hate fucking rain.
It's 50 fucking degrees here in St. Louis. I hate fucking rain.
I know what you mean. Nothing but rain and wind here in eastern Nebraska lately. Mild temperatures, but it still feels cold as shit with wind and rain.
Good... I hope the cancel the olympics... I cant stand thoes ment to be funny foxtell ads!! GARRRR!
lol yeah what a shitty decision imo also, why not go TO the snow, as opposed to bringing the snow
That's surprising. I thought the mountains were getting snow. Guess not. But I have to say warm winters in Seattle suck. It just.. RAINS.
I hope it doesn't snow. I could care less about the olympics. It's just a bunch of games. I'd rather be able to skateboard to and from school/work than have to rely on the often late community busses trying to drive in the snow. People here are really bad at driving. I used to live in Calgary, and snow is nothing to them there. Here, when it snows, people flip the fuck out. Man. Also, we should have a vancouver facepunch party, that'd be awesome.
Here in Winnipeg, we had a great fucking winter compared to normal winters. It's been so warm this winter.
It has pretty much been the same amount of snow every year here in Regina, come take some of our snow :buddy:
Make snow.
too warm.

They're just using this as an excuse because they're scared of getting their ass whooped by the Patriotic USA team led by the uber-American: Stephen Colbert
I'm a Vancouverite too. Last year we had shitloads of snow and now barely a peep. This sucks.
Yeah, last year was amazing, now we had one snowfall that really showed this year. Sucks.

I used to have great respect for the man until he did this Olympic shit. He's buying popularity, he doesn't actually give two shits about that team.
We never have enough natural snow for skihills here on this side of the country, so we just make some sort of chemical snow. Do that. Also, pissed off natives may have cursed the mountains. I think I remember something about stolen native land in relation to the Olympics a good while back. [editline]10:37AM[/editline]
lol yeah what a shitty decision imo also, why not go TO the snow, as opposed to bringing the snow
Everything's all built and arranged, like travel plans and the athlete's village, and a bunch of other crap. Plus, there's no way we'd let that happen, what with all the money we pissed away on useless Van2010 crap
