How do I move programs such as games which I've installed on C: into my D:? Every time I try to cut/copy something from my Program files in my C: into my D: it says it can't do it because the folder or something in the folder is open ... when it's not. Backstory: My C: is almost completely full, I've never touched my D: and it has over 400GB free. I now want to move things (mainly games and my whole steam program) into my D:
Try it in safe mode, but be careful what you're moving. Steam's safe to move, but be careful moving other things, they might stop working without a reinstall.
How do I do this in safe mode? Yeah I'm only going to move things I that aren't essential to my computer.
I'd go reinstall and install steam on your D: Then redownload all of your games through steam to be safe. This ensures that they are in the right place. Me is assuming D: is an external Hard Drive, too long as having D: as first CD drive.
Steam is fully portable, no need to reinstall. However retail games must be reinstalled.
Steam is fully portable, no need to reinstall. However retail games must be reinstalled.
So if I move steam my retail games will suddenly disappear off my steam? Even so I don't mind that, as long as I get to move my games. Shadaez said to try it on safe mode, have no idea how to do that though
If you made shortcuts within steam, then yes. All installed games on steam should be transferred, but some games require %appdata% / my documents folder saves etc.
Ahk thanks, I don't mind re-installing the retail games. But can anyone tell me why it's not allowing me to move my files? I guess there's not much I can do ... other than deal with my C: being a jerk ... and make my D: my default drive. This would mine I would have to move all Program files into D: right?
You can't really move the whole folder since alot of programs are running, just uninstall them, and leave the programs you can't.
You cannot move programs while they are running, and most programs run from Program files.
