Will / do we have the technology to send HDTV through cable?

All my life, I've been on basic cable, in both houses I've lived in. This means your basic 480i NTSC (now ASTC) cable television. I've got my basic 70 channels consisting of a few local, and most national television stations.
Now I bring you this question, will basic television ever be upgraded to something such as 720p as time progresses? Or will you always need a box from a company, along with a large money-burning subscription?
Any input is helpful.
yes, its there, you idiot

There's loads of HD channels.
He's asking if high def cable will eventually become standard def.
Yeah, that's exactly what I'm asking. Thank you.
I'm saying for people who pay for the most basic cable service, will they ever get standard 720p/1080p shows?
Probably, as soon as Extreme Definition is developed. Then HDTVs will be standard and everyone will want EDTVs.

Jesus, 720p and I'd be happy, but I wouldn't mind super-hi digital theatre definition.
Dunno about the US, but in Europe, PAL (our version of NTSC) is getting outphased in exchange for DVB-T.
(DVB-T is HDTV, FYI)
it is sorta the standard, now

Then why am I still recieving 480i television on basic atsc cable? It isn't full standard yet, just for people who dish out extra cash.
Well technically you can get HD local channels over the air now here in the US with a digital tv or converter.

Already doing it, and now I can watch local channels in full HD on my computer, which is pretty rad.
But I'm talking about channels like cnn, fox, comedy central, for example.
No I'm pretty sure it's not possible to fit an HDTV through a cable.

You do have them. You just dont see them. Or maybe I am dumb. Anyways my point is that I have basic on my tv and I get maybe 5 or 6 channels in the 100 and above that are in HD. But I only saw them when I bought my new HDTV. So maybe that is why.

Those channels have subscription-only HD counterparts. One day the HD version may replace the regular one altogether in basic cable once the HD thing becomes less profitable.
It might not happen considering how stingy cable companies can be with bandwidth.
There IS FTA HDTV channels, you just need the right reciever.
Here In the UK I get 2 free HDTV Channels: BBCHD and "Luxe" over DVB-S(2)
And I am pretty sure there are some on my DVB-C feed, I just don't have a HD capable decoding DVB-C capture card.
None on DVB-T (Yet, except I keep hearing there are some regions down south (UK South :downs:) with some DVB-T HD doings)
On a side note, I wish they would hurry up with the UK switchover so they can bump the bitrates up, the quality of the DVB-T broadcasts here looks terrible compared to the DVB-S(2) equivilents of the same channels

All my channels are in 720p/i
I have bunny ears though

Sir, you missed the point.
The future of television isn't in coaxial cables, it's in fiber optics. Cable has a limited amount of bandwidth, and it's already stretched thin in some areas, which is why you see blockiness in some high movement scenes.
