http://www.salon.com/news/wikileaks/?story=/opinion/greenwald/2010/12/14/manning
Bradley Manning, the 22-year-old U.S. Army Private accused of leaking classified documents to WikiLeaks, has never been convicted of that crime, nor of any other crime. Despite that, he has been detained at the U.S. Marine brig in Quantico, Virginia for five months -- and for two months before that in a military jail in Kuwait -- under conditions that constitute cruel and inhumane treatment and, by the standards of many nations, even torture. Interviews with several people directly familiar with the conditions of Manning's detention, ultimately including a Quantico brig official (Lt. Brian Villiard) who confirmed much of what they conveyed, establishes that the accused leaker is subjected to detention conditions likely to create long-term psychological injuries. Since his arrest in May, Manning has been a model detainee, without any episodes of violence or disciplinary problems. He nonetheless was declared from the start to be a "Maximum Custody Detainee," the highest and most repressive level of military detention, which then became the basis for the series of inhumane measures imposed on him. From the beginning of his detention, Manning has been held in intensive solitary confinement. For 23 out of 24 hours every day -- for seven straight months and counting -- he sits completely alone in his cell. Even inside his cell, his activities are heavily restricted; he's barred even from exercising and is under constant surveillance to enforce those restrictions. For reasons that appear completely punitive, he's being denied many of the most basic attributes of civilized imprisonment, including even a pillow or sheets for his bed (he is not and never has been on suicide watch). For the one hour per day when he is freed from this isolation, he is barred from accessing any news or current events programs. Lt. Villiard protested that the conditions are not "like jail movies where someone gets thrown into the hole," but confirmed that he is in solitary confinement, entirely alone in his cell except for the one hour per day he is taken out.
welp. He is a traitor after all.
He's in solitary confinement, he's not being tortured. As terrible as that is, misleading title.
I'd lose my mind from constant surveillance and solitary confinement, even for a day or two I'd lose it. Also, as stated in the second page:
I dont give a fuck about your technicalities. Seven months of solitary confinement is torture, no matter what 'fine lines' your right's booklets tell you. Its fucking wrong. You can dance around and draw borders with your laws, but it isn't going to change the fact that a human being is suffering immensely for doing something that is not violent. He should be allowed to atleast have some form of social communication to the world. Why can't he call up his fucking mother and talk to her? It's horrifying. Sure, thousands of other people have this as well, but I bet they're in solitary confinement for bad behaviour, and they were also probably in jail for committing a serious crime. They also wouldn't be in solitary for, you know, seven months
And here you have a comment from someone with real world experience, better than compulsive fuckwits that sit at their computer chair all day: Victis, someone that actually works at a place where confinement is more than just from the scene of a movie.
Why are people considering 'solitary confinement' not torture, i work in a penitentiary institute and i very well know what it feels like. Let me tell you, the human mind when bored is incredible, imagine having nothing to do all day for weeks straight. Usual time limit for our solitary confinement (Punishment) is around 5 days, and even then they are allowed 1h of air-time each day in a concrete room with open roof to they can catch a breather, this man does not have this luxury.
Read later into the article lockdown6.
he sits completely alone in his cell
Yep, definite torture.
under conditions that constitute cruel and inhumane treatment and, by the standards of many nations, even torture
That still doesn't mean he's being tortured, it means by the standards of some countries the treatment could be considered torture.
Yep, definite torture.
can you imagine being completely alone for 7 months? it would be torture
From the beginning of his detention, Manning has been held in intensive solitary confinement. Even inside his cell, his activities are heavily restricted; he's barred even from exercising and is under constant surveillance to enforce those restrictions.
Uhh yeah, I'd say that's fucking torture. You can't tell me 23 hours every day for seven months on your own in a puny cell without a pillow, sheets, or anything, isn't torture.
Yep, definite torture.
Try sitting in a room all day and night alone, you'll go crazy.
How the fuck do rapists get off easier than this guy?
-snip- definition fail.
twenty three hours a day of solitary confinement for seven months with no contact with the outside world is psychological torture if you disagree you're lying to yourself
-snip- definition fail.
oh no ya don't I knew you'd try to snip it
I'm surprised he hasn't tried to kill himself. After about a month I surely would.
More subjective reports; Wikileaks trying to scrounge attention.
Try sitting in a room all day and night alone, you'll go crazy.
WITHOUT a computer, I should add.
uh wasn't there a wikileaks news thread
nope.
extreme mental distress yep
can you imagine being completely alone for 7 months? it would be torture
He probably doesn't consider it torture because he is always alone.
nope.
Psychological torture is a type of torture that relies primarily on psychological effects, and only secondarily on any physical harm inflicted. Although not all psychological torture involves the use of physical violence, there is a continuum between psychological torture and physical torture. ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychological_torture The chinese water treatment doesn't hurt you, it just drips water on to your fucking skull every hour of every day-- That isn't torture?
Chinese water torture is the popular name for a method of water torture in which water is slowly dripped onto a person's forehead, allegedly driving the restrained victim insane. This form of torture was first described under a different name by Hippolytus de Marsiliis in Italy in the 15th century.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_water_torture
Yep, definite torture.
Imagine sitting alone in a well lit room with nothing but a toilet, a sink and a sheetless and pillowless bed for even a week straight. It's psychological torture.
anguish: extreme mental distress
yup I'd say that those circumstances would cause extreme mental distress you're getting sloppy, sloppy
He probably doesn't consider it torture because he is always alone.
Forever Alone?
Uhh yeah, I'd say that's fucking torture. You can't tell me 23 hours every day for seven months on your own in a puny cell without a pillow, sheets, or anything, isn't torture.
The treatment is nothing different then the treatment given to thousands of other inmates, and he did commit treason...
extreme mental distress yep
Wow fail I didn't even see that.
-SNIP- Bad reading
The treatment is nothing different then the treatment given to thousands of other inmates, and he did commit treason...
Innocent until proven guilty, he hasn't been charged with or tried for any crimes. And not really, try and find another case where an inmate that hasn't been charged with a single crime has been kept in solitary for 23 hours a day, restricted from doing anything in solitary, and has no sheets or pillow, a small concrete room with a concrete slab for a bed, hardly a common occurrence.
I'm surprised he hasn't tried to kill himself. After about a month I surely would.
That is why there is no sheets or pillows, so if he succumbs to this supposed "Mental Anguish", or just wanted to off himself, he can't. And all of this could have been avoided if he didn't commit treason.
He probably doesn't consider it torture because he is always alone.
Try something more original this time.
a small concrete room with a concrete slab
He has a mattress, and they always hold people in prison when there is a flight risk, even before conviction, and he has been charged, he's awaiting trial.
The treatment is nothing different then the treatment given to thousands of other inmates, and he did commit treason...
Oh okay. Well carry on then. He doesn't deserve the right to exercise his own body, let's just keep him in a fluorescent concrete cube for the rest of his fucking life.
And nothing of value was lost.
:patriot: :patriot: :patriot: torture is totally cool as long as it's someone I don't like
