• Basketball Coach Suspended for Winning
A California high school coach has been suspended for two games for not getting his side to ease up in a 161-2 victory. Arroyo Valley High girls team led Bloomington High 104-1 at half-time, leading to the punishment for coach Michael Anderson. Anderson told the San Bernardino Sun: "The game got away from me, I didn't expect them to be that bad. I didn't play any starters in the second half."

Chung says Arroyo Valley used a full-court press, a defensive tactic designed to pressure the opposition into making mistakes, for the entire first half.

Anderson, whose team had won four previous games by at least 70 points, has already served one game of his ban - in which his team recorded a comparatively modest 80-19 win, while he went off to scout a future opponent.
**SOURCe** Basically he used a tactic that is bullshit on its own and steamrolled the opposing team. By all reasons it's allowed but the bullshit double standards meant he got suspended anyways because it's "unfair".
Remember kids, winning is important, but only if you win just a little bit
Tbh losing crushingly and then having the competing team completely give up and play like shit and still steamroll you even like that feels almost worse than getting just steamrolled by a better team that tries hard.
There's nothing "bullshit" or unfair about a full court press
It's really shitty to play against if you're team is slow and bad at passing but that's just strategy being used against you
It's not his fault the rest of the world sucks at running basketball teams.
A California high school coach has been suspended for two games for not getting his side to ease up in a 161-2 victory.
What, did you expect him to let his team bend over and let themselves get fucked a bit by the opposing team? Did you expect the coach to tell his players to just not score baskets or something? If I was the coach, I would have had my team keep going hard till the game was over or the other side gave up. Isn't there some concept of mercy rule in basketball?
It's really shitty to play against if you're team is slow and bad at passing but that's just strategy being used against you
Now I know literally fuckall about basketball but how does your team being bad make an opposing team's tactic bullshit?
It would have been humiliating if the winning team went from scoring to just passing the ball around.
I've been on the receiving end of 30-40 point blowouts, shit isn't fun, but you have to hold your head up high and hope for the best next game. The coach did say he played his bench players so it's not his fault the skill disparity was so high. The losing team should've forfeited if it was getting that bad.
It's really shitty to play against if you're team is slow and bad at passing but that's just strategy being used against you
get better then
That's pretty bullshit. But, on the other hand, that is VERY unsportsman-like. I can somewhat see where they're coming from, but it's not fair to suspend the guy for being a damn good coach, obviously.
It's really shitty to play against if you're team is slow and bad at passing but that's just strategy being used against you
yeah so get better at playing against a full-court press even back when i played YMCA Men's ball, it was basically the NBA with how many games started with the opposing team pressing full-court. generally speaking teams that come out of the gun in a full-court press are like a slice of swiss cheese with how many holes you can poke in their defense. just looks like this coach never taught their team the virtues of the hail mary pass and someone else took advantage. basically learn shit about the sport you're playing [editline]17th January 2015[/editline] also there is absolutely no sportsmanship in winning 161-2 but it happened
Suspended from your job for being too good at it. Git wurse
also there is absolutely no sportsmanship in winning 161-2 but it happened
But what would you do? Just stop in the middle of the game with score 20 - 2, say "suck it up, you lost", and call it a day?
this is literally a "git gud" situation
But, on the other hand, that is VERY unsportsman-like.
No it isn't. Do you know what is? Letting up and going easy on an opponent because they aren't as good as you. You don't punish people for being good or playing hard.
Mercy rules exist in many sports, where the hell was it in this game? It was clear by half time the game was over. At the same time, punishing the winning coach for being a good coach is bullshit, officials could have called the game if the losing team requested an end to the game at half time. San Bernadino Sun has a more expansive article about how it all went down.
“People shouldn’t feel sorry for my team. They should feel sorry for his team, which isn’t learning the game the right way,” Bloomington coach Dale Chung said. (14-1)
Says the coach who got steamrolled by an almost undefeated team.

I don't know why the losing team didn't forfeit the game or why there wasn't a mercy rule in effect. I also don't really know what the coach could've done, apart from telling his team to just pass the ball around (which would have been even worse I guess), but all being said a score of 161-2 is a bit excessive. I mean they could've at least slowed down.
How is it even possible to "take it easy" in basketball? There is literally a shot clock. In football you can just run the ball if you're winning by a ton as to not blow out the other team. But in basketball you have to play hard the whole time.
Says the coach who got steamrolled by an almost undefeated team.
Reminds me of people at the bottom of the scoreboard who cry "learn 2 play noob" to whoever's at the top of the enemy team.
Full court press is quite the pain in the ass as a guard. It's not that hard to get past, though. If you work as a team, you just pass it across in either quick, short passes or one long throw (at least that's how we used to do it, and it worked). So yeah, good tactic I guess and it sucks that the other team lost so badly, but come on. It's a legitimate tactic and there's no reason the coach should get suspended over it. Maybe now they'll get taught how to counter it, so win-win right?

If it doesn't break any rules then do it.
There's nothing "bullshit" or unfair about a full court press
It's a fucking pain though. [editline]17th January 2015[/editline]
Now I know literally fuckall about basketball but how does your team being bad make an opposing team's tactic bullshit?
Not necessarily means the tactic is bullshit; just a pain to play against. Teams with a lot of talent can turn the full-court press into their bitch; but lesser talented teams fail to do anything.
I am not really into sports but what he did was it okay? From what I can tell he just used the good players to win right? Is that bad?
Something similar happened to my high school's football coach a couple years ago when they won like 56-0. And that's AFTER he tried dialing our team down a bit, not our fault that the opposing team sucks.

Running clock to make the game faster. Mercy rule should be applied in extreme situations like this.
Hang on. He's suspended for not letting up? It was 104-1 at Half Time, then 161-2 at the finish. He let up by 50 fucking percent
Holding back against your opponent is disrespectful. How the hell is anyone supposed to learn if they don't play anyone better than them?
There should be a mercy rule for a game like this.
