Im not sure where to post this, if it's in the wrong place can a mod move it or something please?
Anyways my friend got his iPhone 4 stolen, iOS 7, he used the same apple id for his whole family.
Is there a way to track it down? It was stolen last night by one of his soccer teammates. I 'm not very tech savvy
If he enabled Find My iPhone, yes.

Well if he knows the person then isn't the answer to how to track it down obvious?
Go round his house and get it.
In lieu of that, contact the police and tell them that the iPhone is yours and you can prove it and you know who stole it. Theft of property is theft of property, which is a serious crime - the police are likely may offer to go round and 'have a chat' with him and that may be enough for him to simply hand the device back.

Someone from his soccer team may mean it was taken from a bag or locker and they don't know specifically which person it was, which makes it hard to have the police look into it.
I still don't get why Apple doesn't add Find My iPhone to the list of pre-installed software.
Today my sister lost her iPhone as well. She was stupid enough to disable everything including vibration since it annoyed her to much, if she had Find my iPhone should could at least know if it was in the house or not.
Anyway, if the phone does not have Find my iPhone then i don't know how you would track it. In case you do get it back or whatever, install Cylay (Jailbreak required) if you really want to protect your iPhone at every moment.

It asks you to install it right off the bat when it tells you about Apple's apps like iBooks. Putting it on by default would just cause complaints that Apple added another app that takes up space on the phone.
I'd first call in to report it stolen to the carrier IMO to have it disabled, then the carrier might be able to assist with locating

The carrier can't just disable the phone, the best they could do would be to block the IMEI from being registered in their databases, maybe block it from THEIR network if they do track the IMEI of the device their SIM cards are in.
I thought find my iphone was built into IOS, no?
it is. the find my iphone app is to track other iphones and laptops and shit

Perhaps with iOS 7, but yeah it does ask if you want it to be installed but i guess most say no to it.

The app itself isn't but in icloud you can activate it.

A phone with a blocked IMEI is as good as useless. Sadly there's no system tracking IMEI+SIM combinations.

Once the IMEI is blocked, most carriers will block it too.

That's pretty cool, doesn't work that way in Canada. The best you'll get is a block from that carrier.
Check this out https://www.facebook.com/Iphonetrace and their main site http://www.iphonetrace.com/ - they can track any lost/stolen IPhone using just imei

This is probably the worst excuse. Next to the actual phone app this is probably the most critical.
Stop loading the phones with the next to useless Passbook instead, at least till NFC is included.
