New York City is considering a 15 dollar minimum wage.
Lawmakers in New York City announced a proposal to raise the city’s minimum wage for businesses with yearly sales of $50 million or more to $15 an hour on Wednesday.
The state passed a higher minimum wage that took place at the beginning of this year, rising to $8 an hour this year and $9 by 2015. The $15 wage would apply to chain stores and restaurants with at least 11 locations nationwide. While manufacturers would be exempt, those involved in transportation such as airport subcontractors would be covered. The lawmakers estimate that at least 120 chains in the city would be impacted. The wage would also be indexed to inflation, rising automatically as prices rise.
Daniel Squadron (D), who proposed the bill, said that while he supports raising the wage for everyone, it makes sense to target big chains. “These aren’t those small businesses that are just barely getting by,” he said at a news conference.
The lawmakers face a tough fight in trying to pass the wage. Currently, the city can’t set its own wage thanks to a court decision from 1961, which struck down the city’s higher minimum wage as being in conflict with the state’s wage. Advocates are pushing state lawmakers to pass legislation t hat would give New York cities and counties the authority to set higher minimum wages, according to Jack Temple, policy analyst at the National Employment Law Project. But Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and state leaders shot down a proposal from New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) earlier this year that would have let the city set its own wage.
they're just saying that to make people happy
moving to new york immediately
seriously though, this sounds a bit ridiculous at first glance, but I don't really know what the cost of living usually is for people living in NYC. It's entirely possible that this would just balance out the two, making it easier for those who work in low-paying jobs, which would be great.

New York in general has high taxes and fuel costs.

NY in general is expensive in everything from food to apartments. They need a minimum wage increase asap.

Isn't New York City one of the most expensive places to live in the country?
I know that there's tons of people in New York looking for housing, there are outrageous rents even for studio apartments, anything considered liveable is a good few thousand a month.

Yeah, just trying to get a good burger there will run you ~$8

New York could help its economy by raising the minimum wage, investing in our destroyed infrastructure, lacking education system, and build some kind of low income housing across the state.
increasing the minimum wage sounds good on paper but all the prices in NY would go up to match the increase they would get anyway.
After taxes and toll booths - $4.50 an hour.
:v:
Fuck NYC, live in Buffalo.

Fines on some things are ridiculous too. Its like $500 or so if you get caught not cleaning up after your dog for an example. I'm far from a fan of stepping in dog shit, but $500+ is a wee bit steep. 15 years or so ago the fine was only $40 by comparison.

And high costs of living in general. On Manhatten island even the smallest studio apartments can go for $1200 a month. 300 square footers for $200 to 400 grand

It's an okay fine. Clean after your fucking dog or don't get a dog in the first place.

Not all NYC housing, but a lot of it is. You can pay $1000 bucks a month for a bed on a pallet in a garage with no windows or ac/heat.
Good, it'll make living in this city livable. The gas prices are like 6-9$ a gallon, and food prices are insane.

NYC/North Jersey are the most expensive places in the country to live.

Holy shit, I didn't realise how cheap petrol was in America compared to the UK until now
$9.89/£5.86 per gallon is cheapest I can find here yet for you it's $9 seems kind of offensive.

is "kind of offensive" some kind of strange UK idiom that means "three times the current cost also there would be riots and blood in the streets"

If the minimum wage in the US were the same as it was in the 1970s with inflation taken into account, it would be $22.

Doesn't the high cost of gas in your country also go towards funding education and health care for everyone, though?

It's taxed out the anus, but I'm not sure if the tax from that is put into the NHS and education system, it could just be put into general infrastructure maintenance for roads and stuff mostly. Still tons of potholes, fuck potholes.

Any of the housing "offers" there could pass off as common, shitty, "affordable" housing in NYC. One of those is literally a slightly longer-than-average closet with a shelf and pillows on the floor.
I'm not sure if I understand. They wouldnt be raising the minimum wage on smaller businesses, only chains and larger conglomerates? Wouldn't that make workers stray from working at smaller businesses?
why are people rating this winner? a 15 dollar minimum wage cannot be good in the long run

In the long run this could help more people pay for rent, housing, and college tuition. This could also free up jobs from people having to work multiple jobs just to get by. This could also help young people, single parents, and a mixture of the two get their lives on track. You know, because more money allows more people to live their lives with less complications and obstacles.

Everything in New York costs a god damn fortune aside from the food (which is surprisingly cheap as dirt).
All the taxes are high and property values cost a hundred times more than even what we have here in South Florida's beach property.

Jesus Christ if gas was 9$ a gallon I could see mass bloody riots and crucifixions :v:

The 15$ would just balance it all out and not even. One bedrooms can go for over 1k.
