• Replacing UPS (SLA) battery?

Lately we had a power trip, lost SR4 gameplay and want to prevent this in the future. I have found a Sweex Intelligent UPS, officially rated that the battery is not replaceable by consumer, and the case looks like it can't be opened looking at the images. http://www.alternate.nl/Sweex/Sweex+Intelligent_UPS_650VA/html/product/576232/?tk=7&lk=9731 Now I want to know, how could I open this thing up without breaking it? And, what type of SLA battery would I have to put in here which can handle these circumstances? Just took a look at the manual, there IS a optical and audible alarm for when the battery needs replacing. (Or obviously the whole unit needs to be replaced as the manufacturer wants.)
Quite frankly, if you can't open the thing, I wouldn't really bother buying it. I'd just look for another one. However, most UPS's are fairly easy to open; usually done by just removing a couple screws. The 12V 7AH battery in there is pretty common, and could be bought at any battery or hardware store. I work at a battery store and so obviously I see a lot of these, so I know that there are plenty out there that are very easy to open and are advertised as such. If I were you, I'd just find one that is clearly easy to open.

I just found this UPS: http://www.alternate.nl/APC/APC+Back-UPS_ES_550VA/html/product/143301/?tk=7&lk=9731 Quickly Googling ''APC Back UPS ES 550VA replacement battery'' leads me to this: http://www.replacedirect.nl/category/117381-102080/apc-back-ups-es-be550g-backup-ups-accus.html?kwd_id=15097-510D16EB-0585-4E94-87DE-99240B46BF4CS32693843787&gclid=CPWzpMG2u7kCFc6d3godHloAPA These batteries are cheaper than I imagined.
Looks like either it pops open or the feet covers hold the screws. As long as you have some sort of hobby knife, nothing is unable to be opened.
A ordinary sealed/gel scooter or motorcycle battery can be used as a replacement, although they don't like being deep discharged. Alternative is buying a RV/caravan/camper battery, but they're both MUCH bigger and also have the storage capacity to boot. So if going that route you'd need to extend the battery leads and mount the battery on the outside of it.
If I remember correctly that APC UPS uses one way screws (aka they want you to buy a new one each time your batteries dies while its stupidly easy to replace). These bastards:
That tool can be found at most auto parts stores next to those screws since they are used as license plate screws on some vehicles. It's just a flathead screwdriver with a short nub end.
Even if a tool couldn't be found you could just drill them out.
That APC UPS I found has a lid on the bottom: [T]http://i.imgur.com/pefvmo2.png[/T] Even tool-less design. Wow APC what are you doing to me? I nearly get a heart attack of this experience.
Yeah I know on the enterprise level stuff the batteries are easily replaceable, nice to see them carrying that over to consumer products.
Great to see that. Though I hope a replacement battery of APC themselves isn't too expensive. If it is I just throw this one in it: http://www.replacedirect.nl/product/p0104556/loodaccu-75-ah.html?subid=102080&prrel=2100799 This SLA battery has the biggest capacity available for the Back-UPS 550VA, would this one work without too much problems?"
