Hi guys, I just felt like stirring up a drinking debate, because I've been drinking a bit and thinking about the matter. Anyway, some people argue that anyone under 18/21 should not be allowed to drink because they are [generally] not responsible enough. Do you believe this should always apply? If you were a parent, and your kid seemed responsible enough, would you turn the other cheek if they drank in moderation? I personally think it should be up to the parent, because I am underage, I drink occasionally, and I know my limits. What is your idea on this issue?
Most kids underage who drink irresponsibly do it because they:
A) aren't taught how to do so correctly and
B) have to drink stupid amounts all at once because they are sneak-drinking.
Legal limits should not exist (set by the government), but any smart parent should be teaching their kid about drug use well before it's even an issue.
My parents bought me alcohol since I was 15/16 for parties etc and it taught me to drink responsibly. Its the kids whos parents don't let them drink alcohol at all who generally go off the chain.

I pretty much agree with this. I usually drink at the most, 6 beers within a two hour period and then I'm set for the night.
My sister taught me how to drink. She wanted me (for my first time) to get drunk in a safe environment so i can understand how it feels and to know my limit. I found my limit by vomiting all over her bathroom floor but im glad i learned in a place i know rather than a random persons house at a party. I might just do the same when i have kids.
Apart from a sip of wine every now and then (read: only once), my parents haven't allowed me to drink at all. I'm not saying I was repressed as a kid, but the subject was really never brought up in any significant way.
Still, I didn't fly off the handle, and I can drink responsibly, so I think it depends on the personality of the kid more than anything, which is in a small part dependent on how the kid's raised, but also dependent on the kid himself.
I'm nineteen, by the way, and personally I think it's the people who are over the legal age to drink who do it the most irresponsibly. I mean sure, there are a ton of idiot underage kids, but there are even more idiot kids who turned 21 and were completely let off the leash.
Drinking responsibly is as simple as knowing when you're drunk and being able to stop at that point. That does take, at least once or twice, going past that point so you can recognize it better.
I'm 20, been drinking since I was 18 (that *is* the legal age here, but underage drinking is exactly the same as regular drinking in every way except legally - whether or not you can handle your alcohol is to do with your metabolism and experience, not your age) and on two occasions I've gotten absolutely blind butt-fucking drunk. The rest of the time I have a few drinks, then think "Alright I'm getting a little dizzy and misjudging the stairs a bit, time to stop" and do so.
S'that simple, really. Age barely even factors in, that's just whether or not you can buy the alcohol yourself (and how badly the cops are gonna fuck you over if you're found passed out in a pool of vomit)
A good measure is to try to remember the exact course for your way home. If you don't have one, you're an idiot; if you can't remember, you're drunk. Or you have a terrible memory, I suppose, so even that depends on the person.
I can be black out drunk and remember the way to walk home, its not that hard
in england drinking under parental consent is 5 years old iirc
i dont drink or anything but i think that this is a good law since parents get to handle things and not the government

gets harder the older you get

Consciously or when you're doing it? Being able to consciously think of where to turn and remember landmarks is a lot harder than walking it as you go.
Also, peer pressure. Kids trying to outdrink each other when in fact none of them can drink for shit. Even the responsible ones fall into that trap.

I never think of where to turn and stuff when im sober, so definetly walking as I go although I dont see how thats a disadvantage?
Lol, it's considered underage drinking here if you're younger than 13 (Not legally, that would be 18 to purchase), but yeah.
My parents never had a problem with me drinking from the age of 15 as long as I didn't get completely rat arsed and for as long as I can remember we've always had a glass of champagne/fizzy wine at Christmas.
I always found that the kids with over protective parents as soon as they turned 18 went wild with the drink. By the time I was 18 I was drinking much less than I was when I 16/17.

I've had many a morning where I've woken in my bed and don't remember getting walking home or climbing into bed. I think it's pretty hard to forget where you're going unless you're somewhere you're not used to being.

I don't drink anywhere near as much as I did when I was underage, I don't think I could drink as much. I get drunk quicker and have worse hangovers than I used to.
Umm I'm not sure what you mean by responsible, but having fun, messing around, vomiting and other stupid but really exciting shit in a way, then yes.
and this goes for adults too lol. how dumb thread.
I recon its all down to the parenting. Last year we went on a trip to Belgium where we were allowed out at night. Naturally we went to the bars and pubs the town had to offer. Everyone joked how our group would come home hammered every night since half our year are generally people who stay in on weekends. Three days down the line though, some kid who we thought to have been a straight edge hard worker with strict as hell parents had passed out from drinking a bottle of vodka and then lying face down in the gutter. He had to go to hospital to get his stomach pumped.
This always tends to happen when someone throws themselfs right into a situation with alcohol or drugs without any prior experience they either act like idiots or get way to drunk or whatever.
I've been drinking since I was fourteen, I'm eighteen now and alcohol can still hand me my ass from time to time.

What the hell are you talking about
My parents started handing me drinks after I turned 16. Last 4th of July we went to my aunt's lakehouse, and they basically told me to go drink and have fun, but try to not get black out drunk. They ended up helping me do a keg stand. My dad also includes me when asking everyone if they want a beer.

about drinking and partying and stuff
When I was fourteen I was getting wasted every weekend. Thought it was amazing.
Don't drink at all now save for a couple of beers every now and then.
no if you are under 21 years of age and you have a drink of alcohol you will crash your car and kill a family of four
21 is way too high an age limit. You can go die for your country in some third world country but can't drink beer.
That's stupid.

you act like people over the age of 21 don't drink and drive.
It can be responsible if used only on the weekends and in moderation. If you have something to do over the weekend then it's not a good idea to drink. Yeah, and don't have access to a car, that's probably another thing you shouldn't do.
wow. of course there needs to be limits. this is society.
I've seen some kids take booze better than adults.
you act like people over the age of 21 don't drink and drive.
you act like I'm being the least bit serious
I used to drink on my lunch breaks at sixth form when I was 16. The good ol' days.
It depends on the person, but I believe the drinking age should be 18 period. My dad who's a vietnam war veteran believes that if you're old enough to die for your country you should be able to have a few drinks if you're responsible. Thats why ever since I turned 18, if we have beer in the fridge I just gotta give him a heads up Im grabbin one and hes like aight.
But yea when I first started drinking at 15, me and my friends would always do this, get a fifth of a vodka, and just do shot after shot, among 3 people, till the bottle was gone, typically an hour or less.
Then we'd be really fuckin drunk and just play video games and wander about outside till we puked and then crashed. Then we realised it was more fun to drink the fifth over a couple hours instead of all at once and get a longer more enjoyable, puke-free, drunk.
Nowadays I almost exclusively drink beer, with mixed drinks like screwdrivers and jager and red bull filling the gaps.

Yeah no shit :v:
