The annual World Sauna Championships in Finland has ended in tragedy with the death of one of the finalists, the organisers said.
Russian finalist Vladimir Ladyzhensky and Finnish rival Timo Kaukonen were both taken to hospital after collapsing and Mr Ladyzhensky later died.
The competition was held in Heinola, 138km (86 miles) north of Helsinki.
Its chief organiser, Ossi Arvela, said all the rules of the event had been followed.
He said in a statement that the organisers were grief stricken at the events.
Mr Arvela said the police were already at the venue and were undertaking an investigation.
He said: "All the rules were followed and there was enough first aid personnel. All the competitors needed to sign in to the competition with a doctor's certificate."
Mr Kaukonen, who was last year's champion, is being treated in hospital at the city of Lahti.
The event, which has been running since 1999, requires participants to withstand 110C for as long as possible.
Still pictures from the event released by news wires showed the pair being treated after having collapsed, apparently suffering burns.

Why even make such contests?
That would hurt.
Well I guess he couldn't take

the heat

That's a stupid contest.
How long did those guys last? It's interesting knowing how long can a human being live under 110 degrees Celsius but sad that consequences are... uncomfortable. :(
Pfft been in sauna in 110 C' heat. but not a long time.
Anyway its an extreme "sport" so you can pretty much predict casualties.
I don't get their culture and Saunas. Is it more of a social thing? or does the cold there usually require nearly every household to have a really humid and hot room.
sauna a bitch I liked that guy.
That sounds stupid.

It's actually healthy (when taken in moderation) and comfortable.

Sauna's awesome. It helps you sleep well and you feel good. Explained here:

^ Not in moderation.
Touching my cpu's heatsink doing 55c hurts like a bitch. That's twice as much, I'm surprised they didn't all die.
It's not really a sport
Just pain tolerance madness
Oh god melting skin.

Damn I never knew it was that bad.
I personally love Saunas.
Also, you're not a Finn unless you're at least once a month in a sauna that's 80+ Celsius for at least 30 minutes.

That's not comparable. Physical contact with a firm matter means pretty much instant transport of the heat, so your skin pretty much heats to temperature over 50c which starts killing it.
Air at 110c doesn't instantly heat your skin to 110c, as the density is much much lower, and your body is able to keep the temperature at bearable heights for quite a long time.
guess you could say that was his final event
His skin is..oh god that's disgusting.

Not the same thing. Your heatsink conducts heat a lot better than air.
I don't get their culture and Saunas. Is it more of a social thing? or does the cold there usually require nearly every household to have a really humid and hot room.
It is a social thing but feels nice even when you're alone. It's kinda like a steam room in a spa.
Jesus Christ stop quoting the picture.
I hate saunas, and I'm generally much more comfortable freezing my balls off than sweating.
Not that I don't prefer summers over winters though.

I've been in west africa when it's 55C, I doubt that compares to 110C, seeing as water would be boiling at that temprature too.
oh god, 230 degrees farenheit. that is not safe for anything
