A convicted killer on Australia's most wanted list spent most of his 15 years on the run working at a hospital, it has been revealed.
Luke Andrew Hunter was finally recaptured at the weekend but questions are being asked about how he managed to work with patients in the publicly-funded health service.
The 42-year-old had served only five years of a 21-year sentence for murdering his lover's husband when he escaped by cutting through a fence at a Queensland prison.
He became the state's most hunted man and was number four on Australia's most wanted list.
But 18 months after fleeing prison, Queensland's Courier-Mail reported that Hunter was given a job at Herberton Hospital in the state's far north.
He told the employer his name was Ashban Cadmiel and was hired to tend the gardens and work on wards, where he served meals and helped to move patients.
Hunter is believed to have got the job with assistance from a religious cult called the Jesus Group and earned up to $64,000 (£39,500) a year.
Queensland's government introduced criminal checks for employees in 2006 - but existing staff were exempt.
State health minister Paul Lucas said: "No system is foolproof but if proper background checks were done at the time, perhaps further queries would have been raised and his past brought to light."
The authorities were tipped off about his identity after he became estranged from the cult.
After three days of surveillance he was arrested while on an early morning jog.
Maybe he just felt bad and wanted to help people.
Or thought it's the last place anyone would suspect to find a killer.
2006, wow. that's a long time.
GG QLD Govt.
He looks like a generic serial killer.

Reminds me of the show Dexter
Fuck me I work in a Queensland hospital
Glad he didn't choose mine
he was pretty much a janitor and the bullshit headlines make it seem like he was the head surgeon or something

It's mostly a remand centre.

no it doesn't
it just says he was working in a hospital, which he was
At-least he didn't use his (long but) temporary freedom to harm more people, but the opposite instead.

Pretty much this, and the median house price for the cheapest suburb is $300k in Melbourne.
Work in Australia, live in America.

Hospital janitors would still be underpaid if they got double that
You're mopping up shit, blood, vomit, god knows what else
He should have at least moved to a different state though...

I thought there was a pun in there. Turns out there wasn't. Shame.
Is this story depressing to anyone else?

It's kind of uplifting actually, it's like the moral of Justin Bieber's new movie, anyone can do anything if they put their heart into it.
QLD hospital system is a fucking joke
