I'm thinking of getting a monitor that supports HDMI. I'm probably going to get a monitor thats 20". How much more of a difference in quality can I expect in HDMI from a DVI cable?
None, hdmi and dvi are effectively the same, just hdmi carries audio and is a different plug.
HDMI and DVI both carry digital signal, the difference being that HDMI is capable of audio transmission as well and thus has a higher bandwidth capacity. They are effectively the same, but I prefer DVI because I have seen too many instances where people have had problems with it (bad color, fuzzy, etc) and in one specific case, my room mate could not run 2 games at full screen 60hz because the game engine failed or something ("Out of Range") More than likely you will be fine with HDMI, just know that unless you are using it as a TV with speakers, I would personally recommend DVI to monitors of higher resolution.
Ok well, so basically I should stay with DVI, even with a bigger monitor?

In the end, just using DVI to VGA worked much better.
I prefer DVI, The connector is much more rugged. Anyone else experienced the flimsiness of the HDMI connector? - When it does break it always seems to leave an end in the attached equipment which can be a BITCH to get out. Gonna order some steel-hooded connectors and solder up my own leads, gone through 3 leads now, and these things RARELY get moved. Picture quality wise I have never seen a difference, my TV (LG 42LF66) needed a bit of configuration to coax out true Pixel-for-Pixel 1920x1080 from a computer though (over DVI->HDMI)
