http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/locutus/linux-users-are-hate-filled-criminal-hackers-38057
I seem to be pushing a few buttons recently. My last article incensed one anonimati so much that they were moved to actually send me a private email about it. Whether it is a male or female I don't know and they must have been pretty obsessive to have tracked down my email to send this. Here are a few toned down excerpts from that letter. I would be interested in seeing what you think. In the calm logical manner that us Linux advocates are renowned for :) It always grates me when the discussion gets down to how rotten Windows is because of all the viruses etc. when it seems obvious, at least to Windows users, that most of that crap is written by Linux devotees. It seems hard to deny how obvious that is and a great part of the reason that Linux doesn’t suffer from it is because these guys are not going to ‘shit in their own back yard’. This seems to be the classical stereotype of Linux advocates. Basically what is being said here is that due to the hatred of windows Linux people are purposely writing malware targeted at windows to further fuel hatred against windows. I don't know about you but if I were writing malware against any operating system I would use that operating system to write that malware. Why? Simply because it would be easier to use the libraries you are trying to exploit. From what I understand about exploits they rely on causing part of a program to crash and open up a memory hole which can be filled with exploitable code. How easy is that to do from a different operating system? If you look at how intense the hatred is for Windows and the perception, true or not, of how Linux is always suffering at the hands of Windows then it all just falls into place. An interesting point is being made here. It is true that Linux people are quite often complaining that manufacturers do not support Linux as much as they should. I don't think that it is due to the hands of windows though. More that the manufacturers do not have the knowledge or inclination to support Linux. Is that enough motivation to write malware for windows? Can that be blamed as a source of hatred for windows? This person obviously reads my blog regularly as they referenced a previous discussion regarding another who apparently said. these people [the malware writers: Locutus] all use Linux, ‘because they have the ability to go deeper into the operating system with Linux’ was along the lines of what he said, but he denied that they were ‘Linux users’ in the sense of being Linux devotees, he thought they used Linux just because it was easier to write Windows Viruses etc. with Linux than with any other OS. As I mentioned before, from a programming point of view I think it is easier to use windows to write windows viruses. Linux can be used for breaking protocols and decrypting encrypted passwords yet once access is gained then it must be native compiled programs. I could be wrong so please correct me. I personally am inclined to believe that it is the one ‘front’ where Linux is winning the ‘war’ that they think they are in. By front it is quite obvious that the meaning is that Linux is on the side of criminals in the malware verses operating system war. Then there is this paragraph. I like Linux, so none of that is against the OS itself, nor is it against the average Linux user, it is against the rogues who write this crap and a cry of pain about how, Linux users in particular, gloat about the fact that Windows suffers this problem, and then absolutely refuse to acknowledge that it might all be coming from their own backyard. On one hand Linux is acknowledged to be good and on the other that Linux users are blinkered and look through rose coloured glasses at the world. Actually I think it is the windows users who keep their heads in the sand when they don't update or properly protect their operating system. As you know, most comedy is about laughing at the misfortunes of others. Is that why Linux users have so much glee with their "gloating" at the suffering of windows? You can say, as much as you like, that they write this crap for Windows because of all the vulnerabilities that it has but that only goes a part of the way to explaining it. Most of these guys are brilliant programmers who could write crap for any OS but they don’t because, I believe, that their hatred for Windows is what drives them. I do not agree with this paragraph at all. Not only are most malware writers poor programmers whose programs do not always function as they should but their motivation is simply money. Like all criminals they are looking to make a fast buck. Windows is the easiest way to make it as it is the largest target to aim for. Just as manufacturers only provide windows drivers for their hardware. What do you think about this? They then go on to say that it is quite likely that the only reason that you need to buy this software to protect your Windows computer is because some Linux users are creating the Windows problem. That would only cause your readers to get dramatically insulted because I had the hide to insinuate that there might be such a thing as a dishonest Linux user. It’s always Windows users are this rotten thing or Windows users do that rotten thing but never is there ever a discussion about the possibility that there might be some Linux users who would, or even could, do something left of honest. Let me state for a fact that there are dishonest Linux users. Be insulted about that but it is true. There are also dishonest windows users and if you look at the ratio of operating system usage I would say that there are far more dishonest windows users than there are Linux users. I don't blame windows users for their malware problems. I blame their ignorance on properly using a computer. I blame microsoft for its poor quality programming and operating system architecture. I pity those who do not know any better and can only see the glitz, glimmer and bling coating a rotten core. I tried replying to that email personally but one of those single use addresses were used so this is about the only way I can reply. It is obvious they did not want to be tracked down and hacked by an irate Linux user :) It does seem to me that they really feel this way and are not just trolling. If it were for trolling purposes they would have put it in the comments of my blog. Do you think Linux advocates are really thought of like this by windows advocates? Why would they think this way? Do we project that image in our enthusiasm for Linux? Do we really hate windows that much? Why? Tell us what you think in the comments below. Or you too can track my email address down and write to me personally :)
I feel some-what offended, considering im a soon-to-be arch user
It's the typical "One guy sent me a hate e-mail therefore every Linux user is a Windows hater" kind of logic.
Pick a weak opponent and beat him into the ground.
Pick a weak opponent and beat him into the ground.
The fact that Linux users are in the minority doesn't mean they're "weak". I don't think the term "weak" can apply to a group of people who use a certain operating system.
