BEIRUT—The threat of Sunni extremists eclipsing the power of its Shiite-dominated Arab ally presents Iran with the biggest security and strategic challenge it has faced since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
With the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, an offshoot of al Qaeda, rapidly gaining territory, Iran deployed Revolutionary Guards units to Iraq, according to Iranian security officials.
It's weird when Iran, Iraq, and the US have a common enemy.

For different reasons though.
Iran will rush to defend Shia muslims.

Still, the US can't sit on their thumbs

Pretty much shows just how bad ISIS is.

We can and we will.

Regardless, they're doing something. Surely they won't go in and completely ignore the Sunnis, since it would only fan the flames of possible ISIS recruits.
I hope if the US acts, it'll just be Special Forces and Strategic Strikes.
We can't support another huge invasion bogged down by PR relations and Police work.

I can't see the Iranian military being as abusive and murderous as ISIS. Even if they ignore the Sunnis, I doubt they'll be openly hostile toward them.
It's weird when Iran, Iraq, and the US have a common enemy.
There IS a God.
Al quada step in for Sunni Muslims, Iran for Shiite, where's the christian savior? US? EU? Any takers?
Hopefully the US provides some military support as well. Now is the time to be rebuilding relations with Iran, since we have a common enemy and they have a moderate, pro-western president.

Azerbaijan
It's weird when Iran, Iraq, and the US have a common enemy.
And Syria.

this is iran mind you, they had a 20 year war with iraq and we're talking about a population that still hates us for putting the shaw in power some 30 years before that
There IS a God.
What a violent god :v:
Iran is very different from other nations in the middle east. They are centralized, unified, and prosperous.
US and EU should just become friends with Iran and use them for gas and as a "peacekeeping" force in the middle east
Al quada step in for Sunni Muslims, Iran for Shiite, where's the christian savior? US? EU? Any takers?
Another crusade?
If Iran and the US does a joint military operation against ISIS, I will eat my fucking hat.

Israel would flip dicks. It's probably not possible unless we can get Israel to shut the fuck up about Iran.

TOXX. And I want a video as proof.
Obama has stated that no troops will be sent to Iraq, but all other options are still being discussed: www.cnn.com/2014/06/13/us/iraq-us/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Deal.
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend."
Iran is very different from other nations in the middle east. They are centralized, unified, and prosperous.
More to the point: they're more democratic than most middle-east countries.
Saudi Arabia is literally a divine-right-of-kings monarchy, as are Qatar and Oman. Israel is, well, Israel; the United Arab Emirates is a federation of monarchies. Egypt, Syria, Yemen and Palestine are going through revolutions of various sorts. Jordan is hard to explain, but they're not that good either. And then Bahrain is descending back into a dictatorship of sorts.
There are exceptions. Kuwait is good, Lebanon is making an effort, and Turkey is rough but at least democratic about it.
But Iran is a fairly modern democracy except for the theocratic veto on everything. But even their "Supreme Leader" is elected and can be recalled (by a body of theologians, admittedly, but that's better than nothing).
I'm not saying they're perfect (while progressive by Middle East standards, they still shit all over some human rights), but they're honestly better than many of our "allies" in the region.

You spelled Saudi Arabia/UAE/Qatar wrong.
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend."
The enemy of my enemy is my enemies' enemy, nothing more, nothing less. However, for now, they might be useful.

The sanctions are hitting them hard.
If Iran and the US does a joint military operation against ISIS, I will eat my fucking hat.
They won't. For obvious domestic reasons but mainly because a) The US does not want to legitimize a breach of sovereignty by Iran against Iraq, b) the US' commitments to Saudi Arabia, who would throw a fit at US-Iranian collaboration because of the large Shia minority in the Gulf, c) Retaliation against ISIS using the existing American-Iraqi military establishment is preferable to negotiating access to oil with Iran
Iran isn't some poor, uneducated, corrupted middle eastern country fox news tells you it is.
a) The US does not want to legitimize a breach of sovereignty by Iran against Iraq,
Uh, it's not breach of sovereignty if the iraqi government is begging everybody and their mama to come and help them.
