DirecTV Could Drop Comedy Central, MTV and More Tonight
For those of you out there whose definition of multitasking is watching cable and Hulu at the same time, whose idea of being a social butterfly is going to your friend's house to watch his television, or who consider switching from HBO to Showtime as "going out of your comfort zone," then you might have a problem.
Not your obvious TV addiction — that's fine. The problem is that you might be losing a few of your favorite channels. DirecTV has stated that it could sever its ties with media company Viacom in response to the latter's requests for a 30% increase in payments, as reported by Deadline. Such could feasibly result in DirecTV raising its prices for subscribers. The drop, which would result in DirecTV's loss of 17 individual channels, would become effective tonight at midnight.
As one would expect from a controversial transaction like this, DirecTV's reports about the deal (which you can peruse here) differ drastically from those given by Viacom (here and here). Whichever side you're inclined to believe, the deal will result in DirecTV subscribers losing channels like Comedy Central, MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, BET and Spike, among others.
As it stands, the drop is not yet solidified; viewers are likely hoping that over the next few hours, the companies can work out a deal that not only maintains these networks, but also doesn't result in a significant price hike for subscribers. We'll be following the story as it develops over the course of the day. Stay tuned... assuming that there's something to tune in for.
What, people still watch TV?
They drop G4 and now this? I'm unsubscribing, I'll be right back.
Wait, no Nick?

My dad works for Mastec, the parent company of DirecTV. It's pretty obvious from him and this that Viacom are, and always have been, shitheads.
I would give more of a shit if I still watched TV, but this still kinda sucks. Also

What the hell Viacom
Fucking Viacom

if i were directv i would drop them like a fucking rock if they tried to get a 30% increase.
Is AMC under Viacom? I heard something like this happening before but with the aforementioned channel, and same price increase as well.
They're going to lose a lot of money from being greedy fucks. (In regards to Viacom)
Lemme guess, Viacom asking for a profit increase because they're losing money as people switch to the internet to get their TV shows. They're going to blame piracy for this and claim it's not their fault, despite the fact that getting themselves dropped from a major provider is going to drive their potential customers to piracy and make the problem worse. Thus the cycle continues because they'd rather stick to their old outdated business practices than try to compete on the new accepted medium.
Calling this shit
Dish Network dropped AMC.
At least I managed to switch a few months ago, but this is still awful.
Dish Network dropped AMC.
Not because of greed.
Viacom does this with every provider which is why TimeWarner makes me pay 100 dollars a month!
Trust me, Viacom will suffer absolutely nothing from this.
(I would think)
DirecTV is a fucking giant, dude. They have 20,000,000 subscribers.
Their biggest competitor, Dish Network, has a little over 14,000,000
If DirecTV drops Viacom channels from their lineup, Viacom will lose 20,000,000 potential viewers. It will hurt them more than you think.
Cable television shows are just losing out to the internet.

Haha. I get The Walking Dead and you don't :v:

DirecTV is satellite.
Comcast master race.
lol xfinity is shit
Thank god I use cox.
as gay as that sounds.
Good riddance to MTV.

Just before Breaking Bad starts up too.
Just get rid of MTV and VH1.
Demanding a 30% increase? Fuck Viacom. Cable hasn't been the only way to get their programming for a decade, they don't get to run rackets like that anymore.
Anyway, say hello to a big spike in bittorent traffic among DirecTV subscribers.
Viacom are cunts, luckily in Australia we don't have this issue because I think they are run with XYZnetworks (which are partners with Austar and Foxtel).
Viacom international isn't this greedy right?
I just watch everything on Netflix at this point anyway.
Plus, Daily Show, Colbert Report and South Park put all their episodes online, so I don't really give two shits about having the stations.
Now that I think of it I have no idea why I'm still paying for satellite+DVR anymore.
Xfinity master race, deal with it.
Because we need to cling onto outdated formats for as long as possible.
I wonder if channels like AMC and CC will just open up an online subscription service for their own shows eventually
