In a landmark decision, Russian space agency Roscosmos and its US counterpart NASA have agreed to build a new space station after the current International Space Station (ISS) expires. The operation of the ISS was prolonged until 2024. “We have agreed that Roscosmos and NASA will be working together on the program of a future space station," Roscosmos chief Igor Komarov said during a news conference on Saturday.

The next goal for the two agencies is a joint mission to Mars, NASA chief Charles Bolden told journalists. Roscosmos and NASA are working with each other and other partners on a global roadmap of space exploration, Bolden said. “Our area of cooperation will be Mars. We are discussing how best to use the resources, the finance, we are setting time frames and distributing efforts in order to avoid duplication.”
http://rt.com/news/244797-russia-us-new-space-station/
humanity, fuck yes
Wouldn't it be awesome if all the great powers stopped shitting at each other and only did cool shit like this all the time?
Finally we and the Russians have finally found a place where we can at least agree to work together.
Wouldn't it be awesome if all the great powers stopped shitting at each other and only did cool shit like this all the time?
but SH would be so boring
but SH would be so boring
nah, there is always Florida man
I think I'm going to take this news with a grain of salt. Mainly because it seems no one is reporting about this except RT and media that have quoted RT. This is quite a huge news. Not only is it talking about joint space station but also a freaking joint Mars mission. But no one else is writing about it for some reason, not even NASA and Roscosmos themselves. Although it'd make no sense for RT to make things up so I'm remaining hopeful.

They have a quote from Reuters:
Reuters quotes Komarov as saying: "Roscosmos and Nasa will work on a programme for a future orbiting station. We will think about discussing joint projects."
But as far as I can see Reuters haven't reported this news.

I bet both NASA and Roscosmos are annoyed at the shit Putin's been pulling recently, they just want to do their space stuff together in peace and not having to deal with stuff like splitting the ISS in half and all
Wouldn't it be awesome if all the great powers stopped shitting at each other and only did cool shit like this all the time?
Man imagine world peace. It would be so easy to get there as well, we'd just need to stop trying to kill each other based on completely nonsensical things, like resources and borders. Everything would be so much better.
I don't think you understand what this term means.
Really, if we sorted out a way to have adequate resources for everyone then it would be a lot easier, you can get rid of the whole annexing places because of resources and shit, but then you still have to deal with the whole humans holding grudges thing, and then the whole retard shit of people just being assholes for the sake of being retarded assholes. So yeah a few basic overarching steps that might as well be impossible to achieve without concerted global effort, which is a catch 22 cause you need everyone to stop being assholes.
Maybe we will get a orbital elevator out of this? Maybe they will use the existing station as a counterweight?
Maybe we will get a orbital elevator out of this? Maybe they will use the existing station as a counterweight?
Nope. We won't see those for a long time, if at all.
More news media is reporting on this. Countries outside of ISS are also considered for the future space station. Fuck it's going to be glorious.
More news media is reporting on this. Countries outside of ISS are also considered for the future space station. Fuck it's going to be glorious.
I hope they name it ISS 2: The Moon.
I hope they name it ISS 2: The Moon.
A-fricking-men. Let's hope future expansions on the new station include a shipyard for building larger ships. 'cause while pods are alright for Earth-to-LEO travel, I'm sure we'll need much sturdier vessels for returning to the Moon, landing on Mars and mining the Belt. And with the long voyages across space, a larger ship would be important to combat not only cosmic radiation (more space for dense lead plating), but also cabin fever. Plus "motherships" would probably have room for a garden, supplying food and oxygen so they don't have to stock tons of freeze-dried spinach and vacuum-packed tortillas. (they still could, since as those are used up that means more human waste to fertilize and feed the ship's crops, meaning a larger circulation of biomass overall) Also we need to build the International Moonbase for a more permanent outpost.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploration_Gateway_Platform And everyone is planning super heavies within the next decade so getting there won't be a problem. All current flagship rockets can already get there.
If we ever actually designed a space station capable of manufacturing it's own parts and the like, capable of refueling and used for exploration of the solar system I might literally cum buckets.
Why not build an elevator to the Moon
If we ever actually designed a space station capable of manufacturing it's own parts and the like, capable of refueling and used for exploration of the solar system I might literally cum buckets.
Well then, prepare for unimaginable pain some time in the 2030's. Kidney stones can be hell, but once the EGP is commissioned they'll seem like a Sunday drive to Grandma's church while off your tits on novocaine. Also, I was kinda surprised to hear this considering the recent troubles in Eastern Ukraine.

So what kind of research would be done on this space station?
So what kind of research would be done on this space station?
Probably more biological stuff, same as the ISS, almost definitely more stuff or orbital manufacture considering the current ISS was sent up a 3D printer. Hopefully some stuff involving asteroids.
As much as I want to say this is great (and it is) the Russian space agency is only doing this because the sanctions and oil downturn have effectively scraped their entire budget and the funds they had for their next station are being diverted to other military expenditures such as buying more ICBMs. They're not doing this because they want to, they have to do this to stay in space Still I think a joint mission to other worlds is exactly the way it should go, and I can't wait for NASAs statement
Why not build an elevator to the Moon
It would work fine until the moon's and earth's rotatations snapped it in half
but then at the same time a lot of innovation would stagnate
We just need to go to war with some aliens, then we'd get both world peace and innovation.
