I have an iPhone and I don't give a shit about it. When I refer to my phone, I say "my phone", I don't say "my iPhone 3GS 16gb" like some people do.
Because it's just a fucking phone. And honestly considering how stinking assholes the guys at Apple can be, this is very likely to be the last piece of equipment from Apple I'm ever buying.
I planned on getting a Samsung Galaxy if I ever wanted to get a Smartphone, but wouldn't that make me a hipster for doing something that was cool before it got not cool in the uncertain future...?

Exactly. People these days when talking about smartphones always talk about an iPhone. Even teachers, they're like "you can do this and that with your iPhone".. I don't have a fucking iPhone, call it a phone, or smartphone..

Fucking this. Both of my parents own Iphones, and my mom, who isn't really tech literate, would constantly be like "Look at what I can do with it! isn't that cool!"
And it would always be something that you could do with any standard browser. "Look! I just used a Pizzahut app to order pizza!", as if it was supposed to impress me and make me want an Iphone.

In buying gadgets and computers personally I like to look at the features and technical capabilities and specifications and couldn't really care less about the brand

My contract runs out for my iphone next year and when it does I will not be buying another apple product.

I've met quite a lot of people who do. Obviously they don't directly spit it out (most of the time it's like the full name, like iPhone 4, 4S, 3GS, 5, whatever, which is already dumb), but they very often find a way right after to sneak the size in.
Some guy even actually treated me like a peasant because I had a basic 3GS, which I had just obtained at a very low price while he had ruined himself on the then brand new 4S. Some of the people owning Apple products are just complete assholes.
It's pretty much the consequence of Apple having advertising that works. All of the ads concerning the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad manage to make the devices look like they are the best fucking thing ever, but at the same time give it an elite edge to it, which is made stronger by the horrendous price of most of their devices. If you have a catchy ad that manages to make the product look like both an absolutely necessary device and something that only the elite can get, then you are guaranteed to have a horde of desperate consumers crawling at your feet to buy your shit. Apple even managed to build up the same hype for macbooks and other computers without really advertising them : showing off the iPhone and iPad was already widely enough to give people the feeling that Apple is what you need, but what only the best can pay for.
