imo the reason they did poorly in 2016 is because they released too many models/model variants and didnt bother to support them properly, my redmi note 3 pro only recently got marshmallow

And I think the nexus 5 is still getting the latest MIUI development builds
It's not even a xiomi phone
are they not community builds? the hardware cost of xaiomi is incredible but there forum is full of people pissed off at there shitty support, another good example is there fitness bands there app is so bad you pretty much have to buy a third party app for basic functionality
