Hi, my dad recently got a new laptop from a friend because he couldn't get it to work and he said if my dad can fix it he can have it, so when we turn it on it says "Enter Hard Disk Password" is they anyway around this?
Replace the harddrive? I'm unaware of ways to remove Harddrive passwords. But the computer itself will be fine.
Ye, I would prefer to keep the harddrive, is they any other way?
This will depend on what brand laptop it is, and if the hard drive is, in fact, an ATA hard drive. Each ATA hard drive obviously has a brand, and each brand has a master password. Most hard drive brands use all spaces as a master password so try that.
All spaces doesn't work and its an Acer laptop if that helps, bot sure of the brand.
Alternately, try 6 zeroes (000000) or see if you can disable the HDD Password Query option in the BIOS.
6 0's doesn't work, and there is no option in the BIOS.
Alright, there are 3 other options. 1. Remove hard drive, check for an option in BIOS then, when it shows up (if it shows up) you can hot-plug the hard drive back in and the options should show the HDD's settings. If you don't want to try hot-plugging which is very dangerous for the HDD and the mobo, then you can either 2. Take a 2.5-3.5in adapter, plug in the HDD to a desktop PC, use software to remove password. Note that most if not all software for this purpose isn't free; 3. Send it in to Acer. Which also isn't free.
If you open it and find the model & make you can google around for the default password they use.
Try booting up a secondary drive with an OS on it.. then format the other drive, see if that works. Or try dban.
have your dad ask his friend about the password. if that fails you maybe can format the drive using a bootdisk or have to reset the CMOS manually If it's a BIOS lock you have to reset the bios, formatting the drive will not remove the password. as it's embedded in the bios system. Best bet is to ask your dad about it.
