Obama may cancel Moscow visit over Snowden stand off
WASHINGTON — President Obama may cancel a scheduled trip to Moscow to meet with President Vladimir V. Putin in September as the standoff over the fate of Edward J. Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor seeking asylum there, takes its toll on already strained relations between the United States and Russia, officials said Thursday.
The White House announced the Moscow meeting in June as an extra stop on an already planned trip to St. Petersburg for the annual gathering of the Group of 20 nations. But while Mr. Obama is still committed to going to St. Petersburg, he is now rethinking the Moscow stop, not just because of the impasse over Mr. Snowden but due to a whole range of issues dividing the two countries.
A cancellation of the Moscow meeting would be seen as a direct slap at Mr. Putin, who is known to value such high-level visits as a validation of Russian prestige. While the White House may be using the meeting as leverage to win cooperation as it seeks the return to the United States of Mr. Snowden, who is now staying at Moscow’s airport, the reconsideration also reflects a broader concern that the two countries are far apart on issues like Syria, Iran, arms control and missile defense.
If Obama has any integrity left he will go.
Jesus Christ, America. Couldn't you like, try reverse psychology or something? Maybe if you didn't ask for him all the time, Russia would get bored of him and hand him over or something. Jeez.

That's implying he ever had some to begin with. Cute...
The US really needs to stop crying about this already. Furthermore they need to stop spying on everyone too. But this is of course expressed in nearly every Snowden thread.
Looks like it's going to be another cold winter.
As if they want you there Obama.
You know things might actually settle down a bit if the US stopped throwing temper tantrums. It's their actions that are keeping Snowden in the international spotlight. Snowden hasn't actually released any info for a while now. He's just chilling in the airport. (Or so they say).
So what? They're not trying to calm things down, they're trying to get him back. If Snowden fades from the spotlight that'll only make it easier for him to escape to a country offering asylum.

And if the US Government keeps throwing temper tantrums over one man they'll continue to look foolish on the international stage. It's a catch 22 situation.

But ya, the US needs to grow up about this.

Oh right, I forgot, once you leave the country any crimes you've committed are null and void and a country trying to get you back should just 'grow up' and forget it. Because that definitely will make you look like a real player on the world stage, becoming completely impotent beyond your own borders. Silly me.

The United States should stop bitching about Snowden. He revealed that the government is doing things behind its citizens' backs and the government is throwing a shit-fest because it got snitched on.
Also the US shouldn't have much, if any, potency beyond its borders. It has too much power.
Please do Obama, less trips means less opportunities to extert your influence

Last I checked it was the United States of America, not the United States of the World.

Yeah, notice how nobody's been invaded yet over Snowden? Or is cooperating politically with other countries not okay?

Yes, let's not tarnish the shining bastion of freedom that is Russia.
It's no secret to anyone that the American Government is throwing a tantrum
If using political leverage to try to get a fugitive criminal suspect is 'throwing a tantrum' then Europe is just bathing in its own tears all the time.
I don't see you or anyone else here jumping all over Italy for trying to get Panama to extradite an American accused of committing a crime almost a decade ago.
because they got tattled on for breaking their own laws
Not according to any court, so it's more 'breaking their own laws as interpreted by teenagers on the Internet'. Eh, guess that doesn't have the same ring, now does it?
Snowden is going to end up like Bradley Manning if caught.
Like Bradley Manning in that he'll await trial and then be tried in court, but beyond that is pure speculation. I could just as easily say he'll end up like Daniel Ellsberg if caught and you can't prove me wrong. You're not proving any points by making unfounded assertions.
But of course this is Facepunch, where you can post a bunch of bullshit preceded by 'Everybody knows' or 'obviously' and as long as it's a majority opinion nobody cares that the whole argument is based on one long, continuous asspull of nonexistent facts. Man, fuck Obama. Everyone would take America more seriously if we made no attempt to pursue fugitives whatsoever and our political power stopped dead at our borders. I'm sure we'd have fewer leakers and less trouble with international terrorists too, knowing that they're totally safe once they're out of the country. If only our leaders had the political genius of random people on the Internet.
im ashamed of my government

"Waa we only country that does this."
Every country does this, and Snowden said the U.K. is doing it more then us.
That moment when Putin and Obama are having a meeting in the Kremlin and then Snowden walks in
#awkward
But seriously just imagine it, they're sitting down in one of the lounges having a meeting and then Putin just ushers in Snowden and there's nothing Obama can do to him.

putin holds meetings in the kremlin kitchen?
Very mature. This might be one of the few instances where somebody shows the US that they can't have everything their way.
I initially supported Obama because I liked a lot of his ideals, but fuck, he's just become as right winged as every other damn president we've had. Our "democracy" is fucked.
Good job Obama, that'll sure show Putin!
Very mature.
So Obama cancelling a political visit is immature, but taunting like

would be just the peak of maturity, right?
Maybe Putin can shove Obama's head in the toilet, that'll really show him.

Putin and Medvedev are going to play keep away with his birth certificate.

Not gonna lie, I'd pay to see that.

Cancelling a chance for direct dialogue on the subject because the Russians won't do what he wants is pretty damn immature.
