UK Catholic faith schools illegally tell students to oppose gay marriage
Education Secretary Michael Gove is to examine claims the Catholic Education Service (CES) broke impartiality rules on the topic of gay marriage.
It emerged this week that the CES wrote to nearly 400 state-funded Roman Catholic schools inviting them to back a petition against gay civil marriage.
Schools and teachers are forbidden to promote one-sided political arguments.
The CES has denied breaking any laws, saying Catholic views on marriage are religious, not political.
On Thursday, the Welsh government said it was to investigate similar complaints against the CES.
"Schools have a responsibility under law to ensure children are insulated from political activity and campaigning in the classroom," said a Department for Education spokesperson.
"While faith schools, rightly, have the freedom to teach about sexual relations and marriage in the context of their own religion, that should not extend to political campaigning.
"Officials are looking into this as ministers are anxious to establish the full facts of this case and will be meeting representatives of the CES shortly."
Earlier this week, Pinknews.co.uk reported that students at St Philomena's Catholic High School for Girls in Carshalton were "encouraged" to sign the anti-equality pledge by the school's headmistress.
"In our assembly for the whole sixth form you could feel people bristling as she explained parts of the letter and encouraged us to sign the petition," a pupil was quoted as saying.
"She said things about gay marriage and civil partnerships being unnatural. It was just a really outdated, misjudged and heavily biased presentation."
In March, the Catholic Church in England and Wales set out its opposition to gay marriage in a letter which was read out or handed out at Sunday Masses. It was also circulated to Catholic secondary schools.
"The letter is a positive affirmation of marriage, as is the Coalition for Marriage (CFM)'s online petition," said a CES statement.
"As the letter says, Catholics believe that 'marriage is a high and noble vocation'. We reject the suggestion that Catholic schools have acted illegally. The Equality Act 2010 applies to all schools and we are fully supportive of the Act.
"It is central to Catholic teaching that all individuals should be treated with respect and dignity.
"Catholic state schools have always been permitted by law to teach matters relating to sex and relationships education, including the importance of marriage, in accordance with the teaching of the Catholic Church."
The CFM online petition has more than 470,000 signatures.
CES says it is only intended to be signed by people over the age of 16, and the age restriction would be stressed in any future correspondence with schools.
At least it's illegal. I feel that in the US, since it's considered a private school, they'd be allowed to preach gay-intolerance all they want.
I like how the kids were like, "Fuck you and your bullshit, one-sided argument."

They are allowed.
Back in the old days, if you were found to be gay you were either shot or forced to change. I believe this system should be brought back, being gay is just as disgusting and unnatural as being a pedophile. What's worse is that liberals discourage queers from seeking help , that is the cause of all these 'gay pride' parades we have now a days, gays aren't afraid of being gay anymore.

I knew the government was holding a public consultation on gay marriage, but what I never even thought of was that I could take part in it. I'm pretty dumb
[editline]28th April 2012[/editline]
It's kind of old news, but it still made me grin to see this at the top of the consultation form:
This consultation is about how we best remove the ban on same-sex couples having a civil marriage, not on whether this should or should not happen.

I love how they pick on gay people because "it's not natural".
Do you guys pick apart everything that isn't "natural"? If so, why not go after telephones, TV, processed food, etc.
Just because something isn't "natural" doesn't mean that it's a bad thing, guys.
Being gay is quite natural. It's a natural occurrence and is caused by natural means.

Hahaha oh wow, what a troll :v:
I wish the government would stop funding "faith" schools.

Your views are religious yet you're using them as reasons for political changes, fucknuts.

Jetpacks aren't natural.......I'm gonna make sure the jetpack disease doesn't spread and posses the souls of our children
From what I've seen if you ignore the lower percentage of chavs ("Oi mate you fuckin' wanker I'll stab you" crowd) most people in Britain don't give a toss if you're gay when they reach a certain age, but this kind of response from school children is quite odd, but, awesome.
This is at least in my experience.
Faith Schools should be illegal, Religion should be private to a person, not taught.
They went to a catholic school by choice so they knew exactly what messages would be taught, they should have attended a mainstream city school that has no religious stance if that's how they feel; and why do they think they can tell Catholics what to believe? It's so hypocritical and almost as if they went out of their way just to cause a scandal.

lmao everything you say is completely terrible
these are state funded schools, taxpayer money is going to pay for hate speech and bigotry. whether or not you were dumb enough to sign up for a catholic school doesn't excuse the fact that taxpayer money is paying for this
Faith Schools should be illegal, Religion should be private to a person, not taught.
Religion should be through self-experience and through trying to understand who you are and what you want to become. people shouldn't be taught how to act unless they are obviously being malicious or need help. They should be allowed room.
if someone truly has a reason for believing in god, then so be it, if they believe it simply because their parents did, then I don't believe they actually believe.

You still aren't getting it. Religion should stay the fuck out of law and government policy, the kind of bullshit they tried to pull (and gladly failed at) is a full blown attempt at indoctrination.
Besides, if these people were real catholics, they wouldn't be picking and choosing from the bible, and trying to enforce the easy bits.
lol religion
Wouldn't expect anything less from Catholic schools. This is just another disgusting attempt at indoctrination.
My friend's mom went to a catholic school.

Uhh, what would that uhh

You are asking that when the people clasp their hands together and speak to thin air?
Somehow I don't think you are going to get a good answer.

It might itch a little

Probably in the southern and mid-west states, wouldn't surprise me that the east coat, northern, and western states would not like schools doing this.

It's not so much that it was gay intolerance, it was more the fact that the school was trying to force a political opinion on the students, which is illegal for schools to do.
Uhh, what would that uhh

large weight on small surface area = pain
It's my religious belief that gay people shouldn't vote. Make this a law or you'll be repressing my religious freedom!

Welcome to facepunch don't let the door hit you on the way out.
It goes against the catholic religion. So accept that catholics consider it unholy and unjustly. Likewise they need to accept that there are gay people out there. Solution: Stop caring about it, it's really NOT a big deal.
I'm catholic and study in a catholic school around here we don't discriminate gay persons or gay marriage its just in america where people get all butthurt about it. I dont get it.
