Grand Theft Auto 3 can not detect ANY of my audio devices.

This is getting really irritating. I bought the new Rockstar Package because it was on sale, and I really wanted to play GTA 3 first, but when I loaded the game up, I noticed the audio was missing. I went to the options and to the audio section and it says "No Audio Hardware" or some bullshit like that. I'm running Windows 7 32-bit.
The weird thing about it is that when the introduction plays, there IS audio, but when it comes to in-game cutscenes, or just gameplay, there is absolutely no audio of any kind.
I had this problem once but for some reason it magically fixed itself when i started the first mission.
I do not have this problem, but I'm running windows 7 32 bit. My friend has this, and he's running 64 bit. Are you using headphones or speakers?

I use headphones, but I tried unplugging the headphones and tried using my speakers, but still no sound.

You're lucky. I played through the first two missions, but no cigar.
I still have no audio. I went to the Rockstar support page, and it told me to make my Sound Chip (something like that) my default device, but when I try to access the playback devices, there is nothing that says Sound Chip or anything like that.
Restarting steam did not work. Restarting my computer did not work. Reinstalling the game did not work.
I'm running out of options. The game is kind of boring without audio.
Something odd.
When I was playing through the game, I noticed I heard something. It was the sound of a car door being slammed shut. Then I heard the car engine for a split second.
What's going on here?

Check the Steampowered.com forums for GTA 3, you'll find your answer.
It involves downloading two missing files from the GTA 3 download on Steam (.SFX files) and replacing the .exe to launch with TestApp, which is already in the GTA 3 folder.
I had this same problem.
I had the same thing, except it was only for Vice City, didn't know how to fix it.
