What do you think????
What about a graphics card?
yeah what gpu are you going to purchase? Possibly the most crucial part for gaming
Hi
Yes, I need help there too! This build is not for gaming or anything demanding graphics wise, but i spend all day on the net and using various software at the same time and get really frustrated with how slow my current kit is. But as that mobo has nothing, I guess i will need something?
If you are into gaming even a little get an Nvidia GT240 or even better an Ati radeon 4850. If you aren't into gaming or HD or anything like that get an Nvidia GT 210 you can find it at even 30$. But I strongly recommend the 4850 one. Full HD acceleration and you can find it at about 80 to 120$
Thank you, I had been looking at a 4350, I suppose I should get the best I can afford? How does the rest sound?
I read that you sometimes need a bios update for an AM2+ chip, but if I get an AM2+ board i assumed this would all work fine together.

No. It's not $120.

OP, don't get that build. What's your budget?
[editline]01:31PM[/editline]
And it's AM3 that needs a BIOS update. AM2+ isn't backwards compatible like AM3, and AM3 is only backwards compatible with AM2+.
Umm look you have a 3Ghz quad core processor combined with really fast RAM on a really old motherboard. As for the rest I think it's okay. So what I would do is get 800Mhz ram since you won't see any difference in anything really except video-games and spend the extra money on a better gpu.
Oh, great, thanks for that, sounds like i dont have to worry about the bios stuff.
Which bit of the build do you disagree with? It's my first one so I probably have it mostly wrong!!
Any help is very much appreciated.
[editline]01:37PM[/editline]
Sorry Stathis, I posted my last before i saw yours!
That sounds like it will save me cash too!
Or should I be looking for a better mobo??

We're going to need a budget.
I never had an amd processor. I don't really know about AM2+ mobos. Listen to what others have to say.
What's your budget?
Your powersupply isn't good.
Well, my budget is around £350, but from a previous post I see you quoted $ so we might have a currency issue!! Bear with me 2 mins and I will post the costs of what I have so far.

Yeah, just give us the direct links to what you're getting.
Yeah give the name of the site you are going to purchase your things from
CPU http://www.ebuyer.com/product/155714
mobo http://www.ebuyer.com/product/174005
RAM http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166818
HDD http://www.ebuyer.com/product/158860
PSU http://www.ebuyer.com/product/124922
[editline]01:53PM[/editline]
Prices so far:
CPU 110
MOBO 38
RAM 86
HDD 35
Case 20
PSU 28
DVDRW 20ish
Wireless Card 25
Card reader 6
That 368, but if i change the memory 800 that saves 20
What I suggest (sorry for Intel :P )
Mobo -34P- http://www.ebuyer.com/product/190137
CPU -92- http://www.ebuyer.com/product/158339
RAM -36 x 2- http://www.ebuyer.com/product/142399
GPU -88- http://www.ebuyer.com/product/172948
and your case, Hdd, PSU,DVDRW,wireless and Card reader -134-
Total Price 285+134=about 419 Well it's much better and you will able to play even new games on it. Cons are the dual core processor. I don't think you should change PSU> My old 4 year PSU 350W supported my new PC (GTX 275 quad core intel) for about 2 weeks when my other one was broken and I didn't have a single problem.
You can even lower the price by selecting a way cheaper CPU.
I never considered an Intel! Thats only a dual core though, do you think that will be as good as the AMD quad?
[editline]02:05PM[/editline]
PS does anyone know how to change my profile pic? I seem to have been allocated a penis wearing sunglasses! lol
I have a really nice core2quad q6600 2.4ghz 3gb ram nvidia 8600gs lying here that could go for 250-300 pounds

Don't go Intel. Your budget is too low. You'll get better price:formance with your budget if you go AMD.

Since you will only surf the net on that machine even a pentium 4 should be enough. But if you really want to buy a quad core consider this for your budget http://www.ebuyer.com/product/158333. Also same thing with memory you probably won't need 4GBs just buy one of the sticks and you will save up to 36p. Also that's a dog's butt with sunglasses ;). lol, so it is! maybe that says more about me than the picture!!
I currently use a dual core laptop and I dont know if it has slowed down or i have become less patient, but it seems to take forever to open docs load pages etc. I have quite a tight schedule to get my work done in the day and was just hoping to upgrade to something that would serve me a bit quicker/
Also I have to admit, some of it i just want and dont necessarily need. Also really fancied doing a build if I'm honest!
[editline]02:19PM[/editline]
One other thing
I have chosen a wireless n card as I intend to go and get a wireless n router.
Is it that simple? I have an n router and an n receiver, so I get faster wireless internet?
Well actually the g network is about "54 Mbps". Actually these numbers indicate more the range of each wireless card protocol rather than the speed. So if your PC is close to your router just get a g one.Get an n only if your router supports it and they are really distant to each other. Also about the slow thingy. This actually doesn't happen because of the hardware situation. Probably you just need a clean format on the laptop and everything will be as fast as you first bought it.
Cheers you guys! Thank you so much for helping me out, I really appreciate it.
I'm going to order my bits tomorrow, so if you think of anything else I should know I will check here before i press the button.
Thank you again!
So what are you going to go with?
To be honest.... I'm still not sure
I want a quad core, but i know i dont need one.
If I get a dual core, well i already have one of those! SO maybe i should try the format and clean up first before i spend £3-400 and see if the speed improves any.
I am hoping for a moment of clarity at some point this evening!
Can you describe specifically what are you going to do with this new build? Only internet surfing not HD content games or any heavy applications? Also you mentioned earlier about you having a laptop. Do you have a monitor for this build as well?

Get a Quad.
Yes, I use dual screen at the moment (laptop and separate monitor) so have a monitor, although cant be without dual for long so will have to look at that at some point soon.
Usage, generally have several webpages open at same time and usually asking them all to look for stuff at the same time. Also have word, excel, access, sometimes dreamweaver, outlook and web mail open, down loading in the background (although i try to set timers for that to do overnight, but not always possible.)
Doesn't sound like much i know, but the current system just cant cope with being asked to do so many things at once and gets irritatingly slow.
if by your current system you mean your laptop then that's okay because laptops are way slower and more unstable than desktops.
The build I suggested is pretty good. Buy only 2GB of RAM. (And in time if you see that you want more out of your system buy another one same as this.)
The applications you are running (even if all them are open in one instance ;) ) should not be a problem for the cpu i suggested.
But if you insist buy a quad core. it's your call :P I'd go with a quad core as well.
