President-elect Donald Trump said that, after conferring with President Barack Obama, he would consider leaving in place certain parts of the Affordable Care Act, an indication of possible compromise after a campaign in which he pledged repeatedly to repeal the 2010 health law.

Mr. Trump said he favors keeping the prohibition against insurers denying coverage because of patients’ existing conditions, and a provision that allows parents to provide years of additional coverage for children on their insurance policies.
Holy shit, that was unexpected.
Repeal and replace.
Interesting.

How about no.
What could this mean? I thought he and his party hated Obamacare? What kind of improvements have they suggested in the past?
so does this mean ww3 wont be happening anytime soon?
The affordable care act was a halfmeasure.

Good news for BDA
Holy shit, that was unexpected.
Not really. He's been saying similar for a while now.
Coverage for preexisting conditions and family coverage are probably the best parts of Obamacare.
Still doubt it's wise to deny people coverage who have been insured through the ACA, but at least there would be something left
Thanks Obama!

His own party is probably having an aneurysm because they've got every branch of the government in their pocket, but he is in the White House.
I hope we start to see Trump's policy moving towards more sane options, i.e. ones which don't result in huge deficits and harm to the quality of life of a lot of people.
Yeah I'm kinda in a similar bind. Preexisting conditions + the on parents plan till 26 thing are my lifeline right now.
None. This is potentially huge.
He has stated quite clearly he has plans to replace the ACA with something better. I'm not sure what his plans are, but it should be good, because the ACA was very hastily pushed through and had a LOT of unintended consequences, one of the biggest ones being that companies were forced to give health benefits to part time employees working full time hours.
ON PAPER that sounds like a fantastic idea, but in practice it hurt the employees and didn't do jack shit. The companies that would abide by the restriction already have part time employees health benefits (most banks for example) but the ones that didn't want the extra cost just restricted how many hours part timers could work.
Before the ACA, most part time workers still picked up full time hours and that was fine with them, because they were mostly young adults who needed a solid paycheck more than benefits. After the ACA went through most saw their hours being cut by 10 or even 20 hours a week, down from 40 to 30 or 20 because the company didn't want to offer health benefits. This forced those employees who could not or did not want to find true 'full time' employment to get a second job to make ends meet. I was one of them, and still am at the moment. And as I'm sure many of you know, balancing two or more jobs is NOT fun and NOT easy and generally you don't get many days off doing it.
How about no.
I'm just pointing out that this isn't very surprising.
I'm amazed he decided to keep those parts of Obamacare. Maybe there's some hope everything won't be messed up completely.
Does anybody remember this? I did.

That theory about Trump just being boisterous and pandering to conservatives just to get the nomination and win the Presidency...

The ACA resulted in more people having insurance and according to the HCT video at the top slowed the inflation of healthcare costs compared to predictions. A lot of the things which obamacare is criticised for are actually a result of the US system. Recommend the HCT videos on the subject for those interested.

I see this less as Trump being an incredible humanist and more Cruz and Rubio and the people in the audience being insane. Imagine booing your representative for saying "People shouldn't die in the streets". Conservatives are scary.

Nobody is claiming he is an "incredible humanist". But Trump wanting to keep parts of the ACA isn't surprising at all.
We all knew Trump was gonna be a wild card going into this, I don't think we should be too surprised. Good on him, hopefully whatever reform being brought to the ACA will be good.
Watch Trump end up being amazing after all.

I'm not saying the ACA is entirely bad. I'm saying because it was rushed and forced thru to get by the Republicans, it had a lot of unintended consequences. The biggest one being the one I outlined, and you can't tell me that's not the case because every HR rep I've talked to says the exact same thing.
"The ACA requires we give health benefits to employees working full time hours, or we get fined. So the company takes the state with the lowest threshhold and applies that across the entire workforce to ensure there's no overages."
That threshhold is generally 29 hours.
It's been obvious that these parts weren't going to go away. Basically every Republican interviewed on the issue over the past 2 years have said as much.
How about no.
How about yes, it's poor legislation that has a handful of good ideas that could be better implemented in a new healthcare system. I've worked in healthcare for the past 3 years and I've yet to meet anybody, patient or staff, satisfied with Obamacare, and it has ruined my family and I's ability to access healthcare as well. Of the many, many stupid things Donald Trump has proposed, repealing and replacing Obamacare has to be the shining star of them all imo.

Of course it has many issues, just I don't see a better solution without a far larger overhaul of the US system. It's achieved a lot of what it set out to achieve though i.e. more people on better plans.
