Currently, I'm thinking of building a new computer for gaming with modern games at least on high (So I don't have to worry about upgrading later). I'm aiming for less than 400, but my budget is flexible to 500, but I'll have to use up all my money. I don't need an OS since I can get windows 7 for around 10 dollars from my school. I have a few questions about saving money though
1. Should I upgrade my Video Card? Right now I am using a 9800 GTX+ by nvidea. I'm not 100 percent sure that it can run most modern games right now, and I'm not sure if it will last to the future.
2. I'm not sure if I need a new power source to run all this. Can't really gather any new info without opening up the computer, but I am upgrading to a new motherboard and I heard every time you upgrade motherboards, you should upgrade your power too.
3. What are some good fans/ways to cool my computer? With my current computer right now, it overheats fairly quickly even when it has 2 fans (CPU and something on the case itself) along with the power supply fan.
4. Are there any other cheaper parts other than these that play fairly well on modern games? I'm trying to keep the price as low as possible.
My monitor supports 1440x900 resolution. My current computer parts are
Intel Core 2 CPU 6600 2.4ghz
Nvidea Geforce 9800 GTX+
2 gb DDR2 RAM (2 1gb sticks)
If you don't plan to overclock get an i3-2100 instead of the X4, performs quite a bit better at stock speeds, the 9800 GTX is definitely out of it's league, you'll want to look at a 6770/6790 or if you get some awfully good deals/combos a 6850 to replace it.
What can you salvage from your current rig? Tell us what the case and harddrive is so we can tell you if it's worth saving.
I have a 300gb Hitachi drive and a 111 GB WDC drive. Along with that, I have a Pioneer DVD-RW dvd drive so I don't think I need to replace that. I can' really name the case because it is fairly old, but I know it has 4 hdd/dvd drive slots, 1 fan located in the back side, and is about midtower size. I can't get any complete measurements until tomorrow, but when I measured with my ruler (Rough guesses), it was between mid tower and full tower.

$506, this is what I came up with, quite a capable machine.
I went with the Z68 because it was only a little bit more more than a decent H61/H67/P67 board and you get the extra features and overclocking potential for Ivybridge when you need to upgrade later on.
This is assuming you don't need a case, which I doubt you will, take a picture when you can.
And before someone mentions, the F3's are all out of stock.
Okay, picture of case

Are there any cheaper video cards? I may just wait for black friday and see if I get any better deals since I'm not really time restricted right now.
If you need a new case you can drop the GPU to a 6750/6770 and still be under budget with a budget, if you really wanted to drop some money you can take out the Z68, get a mATX H67 and a classy small case like a Fractal 1000, it will support ivy bridge for the future but you won't be able to overclock.
I may just stick with the Z68 since it has 2 pci's and I need those for my current sound and wireless card.

I have never bought a CPU (Hand me downs), so does it come with a fan in the box? If not, what are a few good CPU fans because as I said before, I have an overheating problem with my current computer and I don't want it to happen with my newer one.
It comes with a fan but it's not great, should be fine though.
And instead of the 955 see if you can get a 960T Zosma or go intel, intel would probably be better right now.

I'll be sticking with the i3 that you recommended before. Do you know of any cheap wireless cards or something to connect me to wireless internet? (Preferably USB since I may only be getting 1 pci slot). My current one will not be compatible with Windows 7

Why do you think it's not compatible with W7?

Checked online. Apparently they haven't made stable drivers for it yet. I'll try it out, but I highly doubt that it will work. (6 years old)
Current video card just burnt out and now I'm somewhat forced to upgrade my computer. I'm going to wait to buy a HDD when the prices stabalize and I can get the windows 7 for 9 dollars from my school. Are there any additions that I should add to this build and are all the parts compatible?

At least get a corsair PSU, I've had bad luck with antecs along with a few of my friends.

the neo ecos are fine
the neo ecos are fine
If you say they're fine I guess he can go ahead and get one, Just the last 2 antecs I bought weren't true to their wattage and one of em rattled real bad so I didn't even bother with getting another one.
What windows 7 should I get? Turns out the service my school provided was some shitty website that apparently needs a whole month to prepare a download so I have to just buy a retail version. I'm only really going to be using my computer for gaming and video editing for when I record my games so I might go for home premium 64 bit but I really want the language switching from Ultimate. Is there any workaround for that so I can use home premium instead of spending 100 more dollars just so I can switch a language?

I run a neo eco in one of my machines(techspot recommended) and it's great. No coil whine and it's very efficient.
if you need an OS and GPU there isnt much you can do, I'd just use the intel graphics on the i3 until you can afford a GPU.

I don't need windows 7, I can just stick with the windows xp I have. It somewhat removes the whole point of wanting to use dx11 though.
At that much of a budget you wouldn't run anything in dx11 with an enjoyable experience.
Got my new computer, my friend got me windows 7 since he had an extra copy. It works fine and it runs games fine, better than my old one. Thats all i needed. Thanks for everyone's help
