I don't know if this belongs here or if there are any existing threads like this one, so mods can feel free to PM me, move the thread, close it, or do whatever they see fit. Also, if anyone has a non-shitty thread logo, I'd be happy to use that instead!

This thread is about making things out of paper, but is more oriented around the popular pepakura subcategory of papercraft. Pepakura will be explained further down in the thread.

A popular subcategory of papercraft is known as Pepakura. Pepakura is a program found here that takes 3D models and unfolds them into a 2D image you can print out and make. The designer is free, but in order to save the files, you must purchase a key. You can use the program without saving the files, all you really would need to do is import the models and rescale it to the desired size.

What is commonly used?
Papercraft usually requires a heavier grade of paper because normal 20lb paper will warp too much. I used 110lb cardstock, it's thick and it works quite well.
An X-acto knife to cut paper and crease the folds.
A hot glue gun.
Strengthening and finishing:
* Liquid fiberglass or another epoxy resin (and sometimes sheets of fiberglass fabric)
* Bondo car body finisher for detailing
* Various sandpaper grits for smoothing
* Paint (sometimes a glossy enamel, too!)

How do you do it?
In short, the most popular way of making something from start to finish is to:
Print the model. Cut it with a knife, fold the creases, hot glue it together, paint it with a resin to strengthen it, re enforce it with a fiberglass fabric, use bondo on areas that need to be detailed, sand down bondo'd edges, and paint it.
Now remember, not all things need to be detailed like that. Just a casual model here and there can just get away with hot glue, but it's best to go all the way when doing things like an entire costume, otherwise it might break over time.
There are many guides on the internet, some too long for me to post here. Here are a list of guides involving Pepakura that I found helpful:

This is the best one I have found, it is very detailed and leaves no details out.

For all the TL;DR'ers out there, this is for you. This guy goes into detail about how to make a costume from scratch (from installing the software to the finishing coat of paint) and does a really good job. I highly recommend this.

I guess I'll post what I finished last night. In my Theatre class, we are doing Greek tragedies, and are required to wear a mask that fits our character. The one below is Oedipus after stabbing his eyes out in sorrow. There are no eye holes so the person (not me, thank god) who will wear it on stage will actually be blind as opposed to acting blind (terribly). I have yet to add blood to the eyes.

Whoever has to wear the mask is going to hate me.
