The ground-breaking Geographic Population Structure (GPS) tool, created by Dr Eran Elhaik from the University of Sheffield's Department of Animal and Plant Sciences and Dr Tatiana Tatarinova from the University of Southern California, works similarly to a satellite navigation system as it helps you to find your way home, but not the one you currently live in -- but rather your actual ancestor's home from 1,000 years ago. Previously, scientists have only been able to locate where your DNA was formed to within 700kms, which in Europe could be two countries away; however this pioneering technique has been 98 per cent successful in locating worldwide populations to their right geographic regions, and down to their village and island of origin.
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/04/140430192745.htm Pretty neat stuff. This could mean that the entire notion of races is indeed false.
Hey this is cool. I took a DNA test a few months ago, gonna see if this works. [editline]1st May 2014[/editline] The site where you can upload your DNA data is here btw: http://www.prosapiagenetics.com/
I just discussed this with a friend yesterday. Imagine having a Viking ancestor or maybe even Genghis Khan.
I just discussed this with a friend yesterday. Imagine having a Viking ancestor or maybe even Genghis Khan.
My very long ago ancestors were around the Siberia area for some reason :v:

I don't want to make an account.
My very long ago ancestors were around the Siberia area for some reason :v:
Migrating probably. The people who live up here today are a mix of the ancient locals and the "latecomers" from the Urals. There's a distinctive look among the Uralic heritage in the Nordic countries. My mother and I turned out to embody these traits quite sharply. Ash-brown hair, almond-but-not-quite-shaped green eyes, sharp facial features. It's likely your ancestors were part of that wave of settlers at some point.
I dunno, While it sounds amazing I wouldn't just upload my DNA data to a site.
How much does the kit cost? I don't want to make an account.
https://www.23andme.com/ , 99 USD. Before the FDA ban it also showed health risks and such. But you can still download your DNA and upload it to 3rd party services to get more info out of it. [editline]1st May 2014[/editline] Ooh this GPS service itself also costs money. 43 usd for the most thorough test and 29 usd for the basic one. Hmm, maybe later :v:
How much does the kit cost? I don't want to make an account.
$120 for the full test + GPS location/island/village.
$120 for the full test + GPS location/island/village.
Ehh, no thanks.
Ive always been curious to know where i descend from
Ive always been curious to know where i descend from
well now you can know for only 120 bucks...... ...
I'll tell you guys where you came from for $20.00
I dunno, While it sounds amazing I wouldn't just upload my DNA data to a site.
Winner. Although if anybody wanted your DNA, unfortunately, all they have to do is sneak into your house and take a loose strand of your hair. Kinda like in that movie... GATTACA I think it was called.
I'll tell you where you should go, what you should do and who your mother is completely free of charge.
Oh cool now I can find out whether my mums side of the family really didn't leave yorkshire for 1,000 years. [editline]1st May 2014[/editline]
$120 for the full test + GPS location/island/village.
shit
This could mean that the entire notion of races is indeed false.
This has already been shown to be true, at least in the sense of there being biologically distinct, discrete races like 'white' or 'black'.
Only 1000 years? Then how am I supposed to know if I'm a Viking or not?
Only 1000 years? Then how am I supposed to know if I'm a Viking or not?
Use the service to find your ancestors' village, dig out some bones, take them for DNA analysis, trace your ancestors' ancestors :v:

My dad traced my blood line back to the 1400's I think.
oh great... assassin's creed in real life...
I'll tell you where you should go, what you should do and who your mother is completely free of charge.
Who is your daddy and what does he do?
I'll tell you guys where you came from for $20.00
I support this.
I dunno, While it sounds amazing I wouldn't just upload my DNA data to a site.
Why?
I just discussed this with a friend yesterday. Imagine having a Viking ancestor or maybe even Genghis Khan.
a direct male-line descent from him, even.
Why?
What if some evil scientist hacks the site and makes a bunch of clones of me, then he makes them all live in the same town as me? You've got to think about this stuff!
I can finally figure out where in Norway my viking ancestry lies.
Why?
Same reason i wouldn't upload my medical record, personal data, fingerprints etc. to a privat company. I treat such information as something quite personal and nobody should have access to it (except of course authorities or doctors). Of course I can't thiink of many reasons right now where they can benefit/profit of holding this information, yet I don't want to loose the power to control what happens to it.
I just discussed this with a friend yesterday. Imagine having a Viking ancestor or maybe even Genghis Khan.
My mother has actually been doing our family's ancestry for a few years now. It's funny you say that, because just last week we actually discovered a direct line of descent from Rollo, who was a Norse Viking who eventually went on to become the first Duke of Normandy. He was also a direct ancestor to William the Conqueror and a good percentage of the British Monarchs in history as well. Although it's such a long time ago, over a thousand years in fact, the fact that I'm not only descended from Vikings, but also the Normans and English nobility is just incredibly fucking awesome to me. Ancestry really is a fascinating thing when you go into it.
