(CNN) -- James Brady, former press secretary to Ronald Reagan who was severely wounded in a 1981 assassination attempt on the President, has died, the White House said on Monday. He was 73. Following the shooting of Reagan in Washington that left Brady partially paralyzed and in a wheelchair, he became one of the nation's most prominent gun-control advocates.
[editline]4th August 2014[/editline] Shit could a mod change the title. He was the press sec.

Title should be updated. James Brady was the former press secretary, not secret service.
Here's a video of the attempt, if any of you haven't seen it before.
I remember seeing this thinking, shit Reagan was lucky he didn't get hit. But later I read on Wikipedia that he almost died. edit: title changed
Thanks for the title change
regardless of politics, anyone who takes a bullet for the president is a p.cool dude.
Title should be updated. James Brady was the former press secretary, not secret service.
Maybe he was but it's a secret!

It's strange to think how different things are in the US, I get that there's a huge difference in power but I don't imagine anyone would do the same for David Cameron and that's kind of sad.

Any country would, really.

Mostly either the Police or people in the army who are not dressed in their normal clothes
regardless of politics, anyone who takes a bullet for the president is a p.cool dude.
He was shot but he didn't take a bullet for the President, as in deliberately stand in the way. The would be assassin just started shooting and various people were shot. Although the Secret Service agent did turn and make himself big, which is what he's trained to do. So HE took a bullet for the President. 20 seconds into the video you can see the SS agent, in grey. Notice how he spins to face the shooter, with the full width of his body blocking the view of the President behind him?
James Brady really had some awful luck honestly, the shooter in that incident had loaded his revolver with explosive tipped bullets, and of the 6 shots fired, 5 failed to detonate, except the one that hit Brady in the head. I mean no disrespect, but shit man, that's like rolling a natural one for luck right there
Here's a video of the attempt, if any of you haven't seen it before.
It's all cool then bang, uzi's out of fucking nowhere

(At least at that caliber) Think about it, it will either explode on impact, which would cause the round to fall to penetrate, or it would fail to detonate and basically act like a shitty fmj.

Most ammo was shitty back then.

Do these bodyguards still use the Uzi or did they change it?
Fun fact: The guy who did this was 'inspired' by Taxi Driver and his obsession with the then-teenaged Jodie Foster.
Do these bodyguards still use the Uzi or did they change it?
According to the Wiki, they're armed with MP5's and F90's.

Man, that bullet sure took its sweet goddamn time.
If you watch the video in slow motion, you can also see one of the agents taking a bullet to the stomach as he sat there as a human shield. As close to the stereotypical hollywood scenes as it gets 1:28 or so. And him taking that bullet definitely prevented someone from being hit by it
I believe the bullets were explosive rounds that obliterated tissue once impact is made, there's a story that the one removed from Reagan could have exploded at anytime during the operation- the same one hit Mr. Brady in the head. RIP.

RIP.
Didn't the one that hit Reagan do so by some crazy ricochet off the armored limo's open door? I remember watching somewhere that when they finally did remove it, it was as flat as a coin.

One in a million chance of the timing being right for that to happen.
S'cuse the bump, but his death has been labelled a homicide, as it had apparently stemmed from the '81 assassination attempt. http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/08/08/us-usa-brady-homicide-idUSKBN0G829820140808
A Virginia medical examiner has ruled the death of former White House press secretary James Brady a homicide resulting from the 1981 assassination attempt against President Ronald Reagan, a Washington police spokesman said on Friday. Police are investigating Brady's death on Monday as a homicide because of the ruling, Officer Hugh Carew said. Brady, then Reagan's press secretary, was shot in the head by John Hinckley during the assassination attempt against Reagan in 1981. He became an outspoken gun control advocate and died in Alexandria, Virginia, at 73. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity for the Washington shooting, which left Brady partially paralyzed. Reagan, a police officer and a Secret Service agent were also wounded. A federal judge in February set terms for Hinckley's outings from the mental hospital where he has lived since the shootings. Hinckley, 59, was allowed 17 days a month to visit his mother's hometown of Williamsburg, Virginia. Hinckley shot Reagan in an attempt to impress Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster, with whom he was obsessed. He was diagnosed with major depression, and psychotic and narcissistic personality disorders. A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

awful luck to have an explosive bullet not blow his head up you mean? he was pretty lucky to actually survive in the first place if only his message was remembered on capital hill today
It was a .22 bullet. Not enough explosives, not to mention it is insignificant compared to the damage the bullet itself causes. Also IIRC its not a high explosive they contained, just something like tannerite.
