the Internet wins the Nobel Peace Prize, do we all get a trophy?
Several nominees for the prestigious 2010 prize, which was awarded last year to President Obama, surfaced on Wednesday in news reports. Among them: "The Internet" and, separately, several of the Web's creators, including Larry Roberts, Vint Cerf and Tim Berners-Lee, who is pictured above.
If one of those guys wins, it's pretty clear who would receive the award.
But if the Internet wins? No one seems to know what would happen then. Maybe give it to Al Gore?
The Internet's credentials aren't bad. Recently, it helped speed relief efforts to Haiti and organized protesters in Iran. Wired Magazine in Italy, which has been advocating for the nomination, says it spreads "dialogue, debate and consensus."
That and, as Chatroulette showed us, porn.
The truth is that the Internet is designed as a fairly neutral platform - and it's used both for good and ill. That's perhaps why the nomination has sparked so much debate - ahem - on the Internet.
Some Web sites, including the tech blog Mashable, have asked whether Wired Magazine in Italy is raising the issue to try to get publicity. One commenter on that blog wrote: "This is a really dumb idea for a bunch of smart people ... I think it is just a publicity stunt on Wired's part."
Others say it's silly to give the Nobel Peace Prize to a thing instead of a person.
The who-will-accept-this-award thread is becoming a running joke online:
"If the Internet wins the Nobel Peace Prize, I really hope a cat accepts the award," Twitter user @joyengel wrote, in an apparent reference to the goofy LOLcats meme.
The Internet has an unprecedented amount of competition. There were more Nobel Peace Prize nominees - 237– this year than ever before, according to news reports.
Not all of the Peace Prize nominations have been made public. Lots of people, from professors to government officials, can submit nominations for the prize.
The prize winner will be announced in October.
If the Internet wins, who do you think should get the prize? And do you think it would be deserved?
Wow, the Nobel Peace Prize has officially hit rock bottom.
It's already been posted.

Why?

Well Obama got one after doing nothing.
You shouldn't be able to win a Noble Prize with good looks, persuasive speeches, and great charisma alone. That's like a scientist saying "I've found a way to stop world hunger!" Then winning the Prize and the 1 million dollar grant and not doing shit afterword.
4chan will claim the award.
Oh god what have we done!
Why?
They nominate the president for it before he even did anything.
Well Obama got one after doing nothing.
He gave people hope that we might have a better future.
Coming up next:
Stephen Hawking wins a silver medal in 2012 Summer Olympics, because he could have a been a great athlete- if only it weren't for the whole wheelchair thing.
William Hung wins a grammy for trying his very best.
Major Hasan wins the Congressional Medal of Honor for not killing thirteen people sooner.
Well communication is the first step towards any peace, and the internet allows the easiest communication the world has seen, so I think its a good nomination.
Double post.
The internet should be proud of itself.
i will accept this award if the internet doesn't show up

Still not as bad as giving one to Kissinger after he committed a war crime

Yep, almost bigger than facebook in my area. Mostly with the girls though.
You know what?
The nobel peace prize should be given to people who have actually changed the world for the better, hard working, everyday men and woman that became true legend. Men like Billy Mays, George Carlin, Bill Gates, the founders of GOOGLE, hey, maybe a guy cures cancer and saves BILLIONS of lives ( I bet he wouldn't be "Worthy" of it ), hell give it to a soldier that risked his life to save the lives of many, not this fucking idiot "Obama" who didn't do jack, give it to the men and woman who are DYING for their country, because they truly deserve such respect other than this intolerable bullshit. Why? Because, don't be a :downs:, you know EXACTLY why. Yes, they're the ones fighting wars, but guess whose making them fight? Fat assholes with too much power.
I'm starting to think they're giving them to people just to make them look good, it's bull. I hope they burn in the hottest, most fiery pit of hell. The nobel peace prize is nothing but some extra fake-ass ego, a brag right and it isn't worth crap because you didn't actually do a damn thing to earn it.
I don't think this should go through, because the Internet seems to be viewed as a magic portal to free speech and goodness by the majority of people that try to bring it up, while in actuality all those people are doing is googling pictures of cats and hilarious flash games.
It's a lack of understanding of the Internet that does that.
People don't actually rationalize that people on the Internet are actually people. It's like a little kid that asks his mom why there's cars on the street, the kid doesn't realize that there are actually people in the cars. And it works the same way on the Internet, lots of people don't realize that there's actually people on the other side of the screen. They want to go home and check their high score on their favorite flash game, go read new forum posts about call of duty, go check out more wacky youtube comments. Even while they're consciously aware that it's a person, they don't internalize it. Their actions still suggest that it's a thing, rather than someone. When they connect to the Internet it's like they're loading a flat page to the same boring stuff, rather than an endless trove of fun and information.
In addition to that, people don't understand the sheer scope of the Internet. The absolute largest forum in the English speaking world if 4chan and yet there's only three people i know that know about it. It's massive in every possible definition of the word massive, and it's sizeless. Content is put up, content is taken down. You can't measure how big it is because that comment in itself claims that it's a static entity. Most people don't understand how large it truly is. Yeah, they understand that there's bits that they don't know, there's places they haven't discovered yet. But it's like these people are looking underwater in a swimming pool, enjoying the "fresh" experience of the pool water. What these people don't understand is that their swimming pool is in a cruise ship, floating in an ocean of content. Their swimming pool may be nice and cool, but the ocean water is fresher and much more vast. It's open to many more opportunities than an artificial pool.
When you mention "Internet" to someone that doesn't understand it, they're thinking of the small fraction that they know, facebook, msn.com, maybe even newgrounds. It's a flat, lifeless piece of screen that's fairly entertaining. But that's it. They're treating it like a slightly interactive TV rather than what it is. If pictures of cats, metal gear awesome, and what Steve said last Thursday are entertaining, why try to find anything else?
If the Internet wins the Nobel prize, it's not winning it because it's actually a dynamic entity that is a step forward for humanity, it's winning it because people like pictures of cats with funny words photoshopped on them.

The Internet.
Is it just me or did joining the army make BDA more disrespectful of the President?
What's so wrong about nominating the Internet? The Internet brings cultural, political and diplomatic balance. It stops corruption, nobody is afraid to outer their personal beliefs and meanings. It's not just aimed at the Internet as a technology, but the people that are a part of it, the worlds population.
