‘Occupy’ protesters interrupt Ron Paul: ‘Why do you hate gays?’

As part of their promise to “go big,” protesters with the 99 Percent movement have been interrupting campaign-related events all over Iowa in the week leading up to the nation’s first major presidential candidate selection contest, and Texas Congressman Ron Paul was not given an exception.
During a rally with veterans last night, candidate Paul saw his speech interrupted by a group of about 20 occupiers, who began shouting as Paul was mid-sentence. After a few seconds, the crowd responded with a boisterous chant of the candidate’s name, over and over again.
“Why do you hate gays?” one of the protesters shouted. “Why do you hate the 99 percent?” Another reportedly asked why he wants to repeal Roe v. Wade and “control a woman’s reproductive decisions.”
“Freedom of speech, ain’t it wonderful?” Paul responded.
As the candidate’s supporters pushed them out of the hall, one woman kept audibly insisting that she’s a veteran, as is much of her family. Others with the group tried to explain that they supported Paul as well.
Paul has been by far the most friendly toward the 99 Percent movement out of all the Republican presidential candidates, calling it a “healthy” expression and a “legitimate effort,” although he’s also said that he’s not quite sure what they are protesting.
He’s further said that if the occupiers favor going after “crony capitalism,” he’s all for it.
what an ass
Honestly, Paul had it coming.
So instead of protesting about "corporate greed", they are now calling out politicians for "hating gays"?
Stupid to begin with, getting even more so.

Give me more boxes, let's create a new world record!

How are those not legitimate things to protest over?
Not really sure how they got labelled "Occupy protesters" when they weren't occupying anything, seems to me like it's dissolved into a larger movement now

..there are no words except "a despicable", "person" and "you are".
I still to this day wonder why homosexuality and gay marriage is even an issue. Why the fuck should it matter if people are gay or not? It's a fucking given that everyone deserves an equal amount of rights, but the fact that this has to be a national debate is rage-inducing. What the fuck, America, and what the fuck, world?

The Bible is a crock of shit.

The same thing happened to the Tea Party didn't it?

It's pushed as an issue to divide the impoverished and distract people from political problems that are actually significant.
not saying LGBT rights aren't important, but that's how it's being used by media think tanks.

I always tell people "This is mainly stated in the old testament. Of course, in the old testament it also says that you'll go to hell if you wear cotton and linen clothing, and to stone disobedient children to death."
Not to mention instruction on how to beat slaves and sell your daughter.

yeah man those FUCKING FAGGOTS!!! need to learn their place!!!!!!!!!!!! they can be gay all they want but not gay around me no siree!
Every candidate has policies that harm someone in some way. The candidates are aware of this. Usually they don't particularly think this is a terrible thing due to moral reasons.
The persons being harmed then have every opportunity to create a very awkward moment for the candidate. Meaning, this. Or, Joe the Plumber (remember him?)
The best thing the candidate can do at that point is take it humorously. Newt Gingrich was approached by a gay man inquiring about gay marriage, and rather politely, given the circumstances, told the gay man that Newt wouldn't be the best candidate for him to vote for, if that's his platform. Everyone still gave him shit because he was a conservative being conservative but he was very polite given the circumstances.

If we're not supposed to care if people are gay, then why should we care if someone else doesn't like gay people?

...Because it's unreasonable and leads to bigotry and hatred?
Not to mention that homosexuals are an opressed minority and have to worry about being persecuted, humiliated, threatened emotionally/physically, or even killed.
Homophobes are actually homosexuals, they use a dated and primitive tactic to cover it up by going out of their way to bash and hate on gays so no one suspects them of being gay themselves, but today, anyone over the age of 9 can see right through that mentality.

There was a study done recently and homophobic people were more turned on by gay porn than straight or opposite sex porn.

Recently? This has been known for years.

That was one study. And later they found out that the subjects weren't "turned on", they were just extremely uncomfortable and repulsed.
And saying that homophobes are homosexuals is stupid. I'm a homophobe, I don't like being around or seeing anything gay, but that doesn't mean I'm so totally into dudes.

That is a blanket statement which is untrue.
They are more likely to be gay, though.

One group is just trying to live their lives and the other is trying to harass them every step of the way.

Pretty quick to deny it there, bub.

yeah no
a study done in 1996 found this:
http://web.archive.org/web/20040202035152/www.apa.org/releases/homophob.html
and let's look at a very important quote from that article
While their findings are consistent with that theory, the authors note that there is another, competing theoretical explanation: anxiety. According to this theory, viewing the male homosexual videotape may have caused negative emotions (such as anxiety) in the homophobic men, but not in the nonhomophobic men. As the authors note, 'anxiety has been shown to enhance arousal and erection,' and so it is also possible that 'a response to homosexual stimuli [in these men] is a function of the threat condition rather than sexual arousal per se. These competing notions can and should be evaluated by future research.'
I don't get it, when did he explicitly state that he hates gays? I thought Ron Paul was the one who opposed a federal marriage amendemnt and wanted to give states the right to decide on that issue (which is what DOMA already does... gives states the rights to decide for themselves)

"Vote for someone else then" is absolutely NOT polite

Sorry we all aspire for a world free of bigotry.
The fuck do you want him to say then, that doesn't involve massively changing his opinion on gay rights?
Also you intentionally reworded it to be rude.
EDIT: Zeke129
Honestly I don't get why people are so damned homophobic.

Obviously it doesn't mean your gay, but generally, most homophobes are closet
also, why are you even homophobic? It's such a retarded 'fear'

Never post on Facepunch ever again.

He didn't say that, he said something along the lines of "Well if that's the most important issue to you this election, I'm not the candidate for you."
Which is perfectly valid seeing as that specific issue is not a priority among most Republicans, who are much more concerned with the economy and jobs.
