Selfie-related deaths outnumber shark attack deaths this year
A 66-year-old Japanese tourist has died, and his travel companion has been injured, after falling down stairs while attempting to take a selfie at the Taj Mahal.
The man's death raises the selfie toll this year — to 12. To put that in perspective, in 2015 there have so far been eight deaths caused by shark attacks.
It sounds like a joke, but unfortunately it isn't: The deaths are a tragic reminder to travelers that focusing on a phone screen instead of unfamiliar surroundings is not safe.
Four of the selfie deaths this year, like the tourist, identified as Hideto Ueda, were caused by falling.
Does this mean we will see an unrelenting and unmerciful genocide of selfie-focused apps in the same way we hunted sharks?
i possess an irrational hatred for the word selfie
anytime i hear it in any context i get angry

Consider seeking help from a professional
Welcome to the Discovery Channel You're now watching Selfie week.
Vanity is so over-rated. Why do people feel the need to photograph themselves so often? Nobody else would really care besides me what I look like, I don't see why other people might think that different.
Natural selection at work!
Breaking news, one of the leading cause of death in humans has been found to be human stupidity.
I want this shit on a shirt.
"Selfies are more dangerous than SHARKS"

I've taken over 2400 pictures on my phones and digital camera combined. Probably over 3000 if you count all the deleted pictures, purposeful and accidental. (Apple's shitty software ate a year or two's worth of pictures from my phone, but that's a different topic.)
Despite having that many pictures, I can use my fingers to count how many of them include me in them.
And half of them are self-deprecatory and/or would be impossible without me in the picture, like "look at this crazy sunburn" or "this dog took 5 minutes to go from hating me to leaning on my shoulder like he's my best friend".
A few others were because people demanded I have pictures of myself on my phone.
If you're taking a selfie to say "look I'm in this place", then just take a picture of the place. You being there is implied.

Same here, it's unbearable
I love selfies. Honestly I think you can attribute most of these deaths to people doing fucking braindead shit. In no universe would I blame the technology with this. All it is, is a fucking camera facing towards you. The rest is literally of your own regard.
I hate people who blame phones and the whole technology is scary bullshit argument where the phones have abducted people from their lives. The people themselves are clearly the problem if they're so empty-headed that they're constantly doing nothing on their phone. For me, I rely on my phone for a lot, only because me and my close friends are all rather distant from one another, being busy with either work or school, so we set up a group chat so we can always stay in contact.
Also, I think vanity, while sometimes taken way too far, is an important aspect of one's personality. I think it's healthy to embrace one's personal appearance, and we live in a society that promotes photos of each other. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic on that end, but I simply like to think that it's nice when someone can simply take a photo of themselves and feel good. I know I was someone that was afraid of the whole thing because I thought I looked ugly. But it's actually pretty encouraging, and I feel better myself. Selfies are fun for me now.
That's just my two cents though. I believe it should be a silly little fun thing that has it's upsides, but some people just aren't fucking careful and aren't very situationally aware. I like to think these people would have hurt themselves one way or another to begin with, selfie or no selfie.
I wonder if I could get a selfie with a shark, it's worth a shot.
I should also mention that I also mean to say that too much vanity is annoying - people who do it strictly for attention or for some warped sense of validation are fucking annoying. that's a given though.
I don't know why sharks are a common metric for how dangerous a thing is. Sharks are statistically not life threatening. Practically a non-issue unless you're one of the people that let media sensationalism get to you.

Now a selfie with a shark on the other hand....

Eh, it's just the sound of the word itself is like moist or WYSIWYG where it's just a shit word. Though it's not like I have any better ideas for what to call it

well most people associate sharks with danger. i think the idea is to make the point that sharks arent as dangerous as people think, and/or say that something else is more dangerous than people think.
More people are killed by fucking vending machines each year than sharks, they should compare selfie deaths with something waaay more common, like lightning strikes or some shit.

Before we had selfies people used to pay thousands to have a professional artist paint them and all their possessions.

Anger isn't a mental sickness :v:

Well we have been exterminating the few natural predators we had in nature. Something has to take that role over.
Meet the Selfie Stick, the true apex predator.

Me too, but not so much anger, more embarrassment.
Even when you wrote it just then i cringed.
It's just such a stupid word and what the act of actually taking one is also stupid.
Does this mean we will see an unrelenting and unmerciful genocide of selfie-focused apps in the same way we hunted sharks?
Nope, that happened because lack of understanding of sharks, and the movie Jaws making people think all sharks were like that.
We don't have a movie called "Selfie" about selfies killing people, nor is there any misunderstanding in what a selfie is.

Damned be the natural order, I'm going to eat a selfie stick to show it who's boss

Considering you're going to need a shark-proof cage, a suitable vessel, diving equipment, some assisting professionals and staff at your service, etc. etc., I'd say probably not worth the shot.

Or just be Saxton Hale/Australian, grab the shark from the waters and bring it back to shore, take the damn selfie, and then hurl the shark back into the ocean.
I'd rather just hand my camera to whoever I'm with and get a half-decent photograph of more than my shoulders and head.
