I need a new video card and I'm wondering if Fermi is any good? Some of the newegg reviews are saying that the 465 and 470 cards secretly want to burn your house down. My case isn't the greatest in terms of airflow and cooling. So, if the Fermi cards are obnoxious, to the point where they'll die after six months, I'll probably go with a 5830 or a 5850. So are Fermi cards full of asploding?
Not really for those, but for your money, I'll go with HD 5850 instead.
Except if you want 3D Vision, PhysX, and other craps...
Get a 5850.
Get a 470 if you are playing new games
5850.
Get a 470 if you are playing new games
Lol what
A single 5850 (or 5870) is clearly enough for every game, even the new ones
Fine i'm a bit of a 4xx series fanboy :saddowns:

Tessellation is win, If you want Tessellation then get a Gtx4xx, otherwise HD58xx.
I love tesselation. It's awesome
I love tesselation. It's awesome
Thats why I got the 470
And I'm getting 1-2 more :v:
I'm going to get a 480 when i have the money
It's so awesome :3:
I love tesselation. It's awesome
Isn't tessellation a feature of DX11? Are Fermi cards better for tessellation because the hardware have components dedicated for it or something?
Yeh the Fermi cards are awesome on it. I watched some video on GTX480s and it was AMAZING
Tesselation is just an eye-candy, it's not like you gonna to see the difference with, during gameplay.
Even though I agree the GTX 4xx series are better for Tesselation, it's not clearly worth it for your money.

Youtube videos are generally retarded about it. Make me rage everytime in fact.
Fermi cars run fine, they run hotter than ATI cards, but they're built to withstand the heat better, but they don't really heat up that much more than an the ATI equivalent of that card.
Also, the 465 isn't really worth it in my opinion, it's more expensive than the 5830 and struggles to keep up with it in most DX9-10 games, the 470, however, is a very nice card, and provided you aren't outside of the US or Canada, you should get it, otherwise they're expensive as fuck and should be disregarded.
Well if you have the money to get a high end build you should chose a 480 over a 5970 seeming the 5970 performs only a TINY bit better then the 480 and costs up to 200$ more than it.
And eye candy is what it's all about.
-snip- for idiots that's not what i meant

Fermi is MEANT to run hot so it doesn't release as much heat thus making everything else cooler by not shooting out shit loads of heat
Stop. Posting. Ever.
Thank you very much, my dear.

If you can read as well, OP has only money for 470/5850.
I'm not saying he should get a fucking 480.
Read my post before you judge it jesus
So, why have you suggesting this if you knew OP couldn't afford it?
[editline]12:26AM[/editline]
There is no way it should be mentionned on this topic, then.
Omg you're a fucking retard
(User was banned for this post ("Flaming" - birkett))
I would go for a GTX470 just for its dedicated tesselation cores, and PhysX/CUDA support
Omg you're a fucking retard
Why I'm not suprised by your attitude.
What.
Anyway go for the GTX470 because of awesome tesselation and PhysX and CUDA
What.
Anyway go for the GTX470 because, like B1N4RY! said it has dedicated tesselation cores PhysX and CUDA
did you just become four times more retarded overnight or what
a GTX 470 is especially worth it for the price cuts now in the USA/Canada. You can get an MSI GTX 470 for $299 USD on Newegg.
So you just disagreed with me and then agreed with me :psyduck:
They're nice and cheap now
Just get a 5870 OP. Sure the 480 has tessellation, but is it really worth the extra $50-100?
ITT: i watched a video so i know everything
Go with the 5870
I'm not getting a 5870.
So what I've learned from this thread so far is that, according to derlicious, Fermi cards generate more heat thereby making the rest of the system cooler.
According to toms hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-480,2585-7.html), neither card outperforms the other consistently across multiple games.
I'm looking at:

and
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150477
The reviews for both cards say that they run pretty hot.
I have a 600W power supply. Will the Fermi cards eat my power supply?
I'm not getting a 5870.

What?
They make the rest of the system hotter not cooler(not significantly though if the airflow is good)
I've tested both cards and the 5850 is quite a bit cooler (60C vs ~75-80C on load) but unless the heat/noise bugs you it really shouldnt matter since theyre meant to withstand the heat.
What psu do you have?
A good psu should handle the 470 relatively well.
Both the cards are great and its really up to you whether you want to spend 300$ or 340$ on a gpu.
